Wave to scooter riders?
« on: August 18, 2010, 06:10:45 AM »
Most people will wave (or nod or lift a few fingers off the bar or whatever) to bikers going the other way.  Do you acknowledge scooter riders the same way?  I generally don't and I haven't had anyone on a scooter salute me yet but then a good portion of bikers around here don't either.

Hadn't thought about it, but around here, most of the scooter riders are kids (with a few old guys). They don't even seem to realize that there IS anyone else but them and the cars anyway. Just my experience. ::)

Have done in the past, got some really confused looks from them. SO in general no, I will once in awhile and some times, I will get a salute back.

They can't afford to take a hand off those handlebars so I don't want to temp them.

I guess when I said scooters I meant the larger ones with the slightly more serious riders.  I didn't mean kids on 30cc moped type things.  I see people commuting around on the larger ones, sometimes even wearing gear, sometimes on the highway.

Actually, when I do see someone doing something stupid on two wheels lately, it's usually been scooters.  One time driving my car on the highway, second lane from the right, scooter rider merges onto the highway and proceeds to cruise specifically in my blind spot for 20 minutes.  If I didn't remember seeing her merge on and hadn't actually looked for her (i.e. driven like most everyone else does in MA) she would've gotten cut off or worse when my exit came around.  Jacket, half-lid and goggles, maybe even a scarf.  Maybe she thought getting some kind of look right means she's immune from having to use common sense.

I don't wave at them.  Around here on my side of town (near East side of Indianapolis), it seems more and more that scooters are being used mostly by guys who apparently have lost their driver's licenses due to DUI or other offenses.  Anything 50cc or smaller doesn't need to be plated here and no license is necessary....so they go hop on those scooters and ride.  I keep both hands on the bars when I see one as they may have just left a bar and I may need to swerve in order not to cross paths with them.   :o

I make a point to Allways wave at the scooters but they allways look at me like " WTF" Some of them are pretty cool.  A buddy of mine has a place at the beach and has 3 scooters they are the way to go down the ocean...

Generally if its a cool old Vespa or Lambretta I will and they wave back as they are usually a notch or two above the usual scooter riders and know the score.

I usually wave to just about anyone when im riding the cb.  Not because i like their bike/ or them,  but waving is starting to get rare around here and i like to see some of the "Wtf" looks i get.   But when im on my street legal yz and see another dirtbike converted sumo , i usually salute them and get the same in return  :)

I typically reserve "the wave" for when I'm out on the highway.  Too much traffic in town for me to worry about waving to other riders.  I rarely see a scooter out on the highways, but I'll wave if I do see them.

Us Harley riders have to draw the line somewhere!

A few weeks ago forum member Vance (he has a mint 550K) and I were out for a ride and a Harley pulled up next to us at the light and looked over and said "Wow, those bikes must be 30 years old, nice"  There is hope for you Harley riders yet. ;D

Same here.

One just got squished here on Island.
Quote from newspaper:
"It was “scooter versus passenger car” according to Corporal Trevor MacKay of the Gabriola RCMP, when a scooter entered North Road turning right off Horseshoe Road, and swerved into oncoming traffic.

MacKay said the young man on the scooter, who was injured but “will definitely survive”, was going too fast to make the corner. He said the driver of the passenger car was shaken by the accident, and that there was damage to the car. The detachment has not decided whether to press charges, he said, adding that the youth is not a Gabriola resident.

MacKay also highly commended fire and ambulance First Responders for their professionalism and quick response time, as well as for blocking off the accident scene from traffic to protect the public."

Basicaly didn't stop at stop sign leading onto a main road.
* Funny bit is, The cops came over from the mainland the next day to put up a speed trap at that intersection even though the driver of the car was not speeding ::)

Sorry, I don't wave to scooters.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

I treat every 2 wheels equally. My method is to wave at anyone waves at me, including bicycles or even little kids on street. So far, none of scooter riders has ever waved at me so I guess my answer would be "no" at this point.

Around where I live, almost all of scooter riders are DUI holders; they are riding it by necessity, not by choice.  That might something to do with it...

Is that legal.  Here in CO you need a valid driver's license to operate even a 49cc scooter.

I wave at everything on two wheels, I might look like a jackass but if you don't wave back....you look like a prick.

Around here the teenagers on scooters (you can get on a 49cc at 14 yrs old in New Brunswick) think it is cool when someone on a real bike waves at them.

I think it plants the seed of good riding manners.  Too Canadian??

i'm polite about it.  If they wave at me i'll wave back. but i don't initiate "the wave" to them

I don't really "get" scooters.  if you're gonna be on two wheels, why not be on a motorcycle?
kinda like boogie boarders.  if you're gonna be in the ocean with a board, why not a surf board? or even a long board?

I believe used to be able to operate under 50cc bike without DL.  I know that you need to have one for it now. Most of DUI holders probably don't know the law has changed or somewhat ethically challenged so don't care.... It is less likely to get pulled over if you are riding a scooter. Kinda like riding a bicycle. You have to try hard.

The only scooters I see are mounted by clowns wearing tank tops and flip flops. They think that riding a scooter means they're in Cancun. I seldom see scooterers (is that what they're called?) wearing any proper gear. I wouldn't bother waving... who knows what'll happen if they suddenly realize they aren't on vacation in the Caribbean.
