I will wave at most all riders.

I bought a small honda motorcycle as an intro to two wheeled commuting not by bicycle as biking to work was taking too much of my day and my hours were erratic and very late at night rides home in the dark weren't fun.

Anyway, the Honda C70 ('81) (70cc) was fun (still is) but it required a motorcycle license. Honda considers them a step through motorcycle with auto clutch. (Check out the Honda C70 Yahoo group.)
Even the 49CC motorized bikes require one in AZ.  The 80-100 mpg was good.
I looked like a circus bear on the C70 and rode it for many months. My daughter wants it for a graduation gift. She graduates in May from college.

I went to the '70 Honda S90 as it was both larger and much cooler than the C70.
I picked up a '65 Honda CA95 Benly Touring 150 for restoration and as a city commuter bike.

I've always liked vintage cars and motorcycles and would rather work on and own and operate a vintage vehicle than modern.

I don't really "get" scooters.  if you're gonna be on two wheels, why not be on a motorcycle?

In Michigan:
No insurance required.
Close to 100 mpg.
No helmet required (just stating the law - don't hate...).
Only have to register it once every 3 years.
No shifting - easy to ride.
Fun to just play around on.
Light.
Relatively inexpensive.
They are small, and are good for small people.

What I don't "get," is why you can't have both.   ;)

Now... would you snobs not wave to her...?   :P

(I think the poll should have the option "I hate scooter riders, but I would wave to soichiro's girlfriend".)   ;D

It really depends on the scooter. I'll wave at a cool old vespa or something. I don't wave at the chinese DUI-mobiles. I see more scooters do dumb #$%* on the road than crotch rockets.

I waved at a big step through for the first time last week, but that was only because we were both riding in a monsoon.

I do really want to get a scooter though. A local guy is building an awesome scooter called a honda Chaly.

http://www.indycarscene.com/showthread.php?t=6459

The Trail 70 he built is bad ass, I can't wait for him to finish the Chaly.

The only scooters I see are mounted by clowns wearing tank tops and flip flops. They think that riding a scooter means they're in Cancun. I seldom see scooterers (is that what they're called?) wearing any proper gear. I wouldn't bother waving... who knows what'll happen if they suddenly realize they aren't on vacation in the Caribbean.

See- this is what I was going to say. It's hard for me to take them serious.

Usually, I like to keep my hands on the grips and my eyes on the road. I occasionally wave to anybody that seems like they know what they are doing. Mostly I just give a nod but if something catches my eye I'll make an effort to wave.

I personally do not like scooters for many reasons- Anybody can get one with little to no training, no license, no registration, no helmet, no regard for their safety or anybody else's.

In an urban setting as well as a college town like Boston, it is all too common to see stupidity brought to an art form. College kids riding around in heavy traffic, with flip flops on their feet. Weaving in and out of lanes. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people talking on cellphones while riding with one hand, or worse, holding the phone to their ear with their shoulder while riding. I once saw a young girl texting while she rode her scooter. I wanted to stop and scold her, as well as find out how the hell she was doing it.  Then there's my biggest pet peeve that I see all the time... idiots that wear a full face helmet propped up on their forehead. If there's an easier way to snap your neck, please let me know.

I also know quite a few people that lost their licenses due to DWI, stupidity, etc., who solve the problem by getting a scooter. Every single one of them has crashed at least once. One died on impact.

Another reason I do not like scooters is that they can go anywhere a car or motorcycle can go and often ignore basic driving rules but don't require you to register them or insure them. Also, they can park anywhere, even the sidewalk (I know a little girl that was burned when she touched the muffler of a scooter parked on the sidewalk). This rubs me the wrong way because I have to pay insurance, excise tax, title fee, and registration but am limited to parking only in designated parking spots. Parking is a particular issue in Boston. It wouldn't surprise me to park my bike at a meter, between two cars, and come out later to find a ticket on my bike. Once I had parked my bike at a meter, fed the quarters in, only to find later that a metermaid ticketed my bike but not the car that parked there after I did.

Many scooter riders are responsible folks just looking for a cheap simple form of transportation but a lot of them are reckless, poorly trained, oblivious to the dangers for them and others, and think it's just a chair with wheels.  I equate the scooter and motorcycle to a 12 gauge shotgun and a 22 caliber handgun. Sure, the shotgun will blow your head clean off but the saturday night special will still kill you just as dead.
What am I doing and why am I doing it? Those are excellent questions.

In MA, if I remember correctly, scooters still have to be registered, even the 49cc ones and may not go over 25 or something like that.  Also, anything that can go over 35, even 49cc is technically a motorcycle.  I remember looking it up because I was considering getting a scooter as cheap transportation.  But I'm in metro west and going 25 on suburban roads is not a good idea and if I have to register a scooter and have a license, I might as well have a bike.  Sounds like it doesn't get enforced at all and I hear what you're saying but it's not all that different from just getting a cheap bike and blowing around on that without a license and registration.  Except I guess you're more likely to get caught doing it with a bike.

Even the 49CC motorized bikes require one in AZ.

under 49cc you don't need a motorcycle endorsement.
50cc+ you need an endorsement

also if you take the test with anything smaller than 100cc you get a sort of handicapped endorsement that only allows you to ride stuff under 100cc

You are correct Hotpocket, under 49cc does not require a license and if you test on a 100cc or lower you have to take the test again when you want to ride something bigger than 100cc.
Technically 150cc is legal for the highway but it is likely to get you a ticket as 250cc is marginally adequate.

I now have a '74 CB550 and a '78 CX500 will be in my parking spot the end of the month, first of next month.
My CB is still being sorted out and the CX500 will be on the AZ Highways before the CB at the current rate of progress...

I ride both a 125cc scooter and a CB and I dont really wave at anybody unless they wave at me first.  Its rare that someone waves at me when on the scooter but it has happened on occasion and it makes me laugh; it just wierd to see some big bearded harley guy with all his flashy chrome and loud-as-hell pipes toss you a wave on your dinky commuter ride.  70mpg and is nothing to scoff at though.

In Boston, scooter laws are a joke to most urban kids. The difference between scooters and bicycles is that with a scooter, there is the implication that you are a motor vehicle with all the rights and abilities of a motor vehicle, yet because you're not on a motorcycle or in a car, there's also the implication that you are like a bicycle with all the freedoms of a bicycle. When you have a novice, or idiot, riding around in heavy traffic operating under both of these delusions, there can only be trouble.

Also, a bicycle is human powered. It is lighter and won't go as fast, so it won't crash as hard. Plus, even bicycles have their own lanes now in Boston.
What am I doing and why am I doing it? Those are excellent questions.

As for the waving...

I used to drive around in a 1986 Ford 15 passenger van. It was brick red on top, off white on the bottom, with tinted mirror windows all the way around. It was huge!! It was like a living room on wheels. Massive engine, 2 gas tanks, trailer hitch... I would move my band of 5 and all our equipment, as well as any soundman, roadies, and entourage types. The seats were super comfy and the back one was long enough to stretch out and take a nap. Any time I saw some good junk on the side of the road I wouldn't think twice about throwing it in the back to recycle, sell, use. Anyway... Every now and then I would see a guy drive by with the exact same van. One day I saw him sitting at the wheel in front of a church, unloading what looked like his family of 10 or 12 kids, his wife and in-laws. He looked totally beat down. As I passed going the opposite direction, I slowed down and tapped the horn. He looked up and I waved. At first he seemed confused but quickly, his eyes scanned the side of the behemoth I was driving, kind of lit up and he waved and smiled. Over the years, I saw him a few times more, and each time the reaction would be less and less one of surprise and delight and more and more like a cool head nod affirming each others solidarity. An unspoken, "that's right. We bad". There's some sort of simpatico when it comes to certain things and vehicles are one of them.
What am I doing and why am I doing it? Those are excellent questions.
