Where do I get shift light lead/source from?
« on: August 18, 2010, 01:04:05 PM »
I've gotten rid of the ~40 year old cluster(s) and simply want to put a single l.e.d. shift light (when hitting high revs) into the headlight assembly. The OEM shift light was in the tach cluster with an orange wire lead out of it into the headlight assembly, however opening up the headlight assembly, the matching orange lead was gone to content it (some one has tinkered with the bike).

So, the led needs a source informing it to turn on (indicating high revs), where do you normally get that source in most bikes?

The OEM tach had a shift light built into it, it works independently of the tach and not wired to it in any way and/or worked as a mechanical shift light. It's simply the shift light bulb with housing built into the tach housing (convenient to have RPM and shift light next to each other), however tracing the wires only the ground was plugged in, and the source lead (to have it turn on) was just dangling as the bike had been screwed with.

In other words, I'm trying to locate where the shift light would get a lead to inform it to turn on when it got into the high revs.

I would imagine that any power source would work since the on-off mechanism is mechanical. Look for a brown/white, brown or black wire with extra connecting points to plug into.

I should re-phrase the above, it's non-mechanical.

All it is, is a light bulb with 2 leads, one ground and one source ......I need to find out what turns it on on high revs.

Hmmm, rereading your original post, orange is generally reserved for the turn signal indicator lamp. I even downloaded a cl175 manual to verify.

I could be completely wrong on the function of this indicator light, funny thing if I'm been tracing a turn signal indicator  :-\

Here it is seen on the right:

Here's the back, to the right, on top, in orange:

If there is a blue going to the same bulb, then it is a signal indicator. Looks like it in the picture.
