RIP 650 forum
« on: February 24, 2006, 09:56:35 AM »
Did anyone notice that we lost the "classic cb 650 forum" website yesterday 23 feb, it was quite sudden. I know the site wasn't too well used in recent months but I'm sure it will be missed as another reference source for the old Honda! :(

I did notice it was gone -- I have written BigJims to see what happened with no response --

I'm thinking about starting another forum up -- as a resource it was invaluable to me...

Do you think there is much interest?

Hey CanObeans, you wouldn't happen to be a Tom Robbins fan, would you?

I am sorry to hear this.  The site was a good supplement to this one and had a pretty good userbase.  Definately not as active as this site, but fun to come back to now and again and see what others were up to.

That sucks!!!   Usually only went there a couple times a week but it was interesting to see what they where up to.  Most everybody on it was in Europe.

I contacted BigJims.  He has some personal stuff going on that influenced his decsion to shut down the site.  The story is his to tell, but given the circumstances a sudden termination of the site was justified.  He and others put a lot of work into it.  Hopefully we will see it come back to life in the future.  There was a lot of great and specific 650 info there.

Bummer.

I hadn't been there for a while, but it was cool having it there.

Sometimes our need for help goes unanswered here because the 650 seems to be the redheaded stepchild of SOHC.

Good luck to you BiGJims

What's a CB650? That some kinda Yammy-Har? ??? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

The 650?  Why it’s the perfect combination of the unpretentiousness of the 550 and the increased high speed comfort of the larger capcity cycle.  Perhaps it’s the culmination of a decade’s worth of SOHC knowledge.  It was a bike before it’s time; a bike for the environmentalist.  It used what others might have thrown away and had increased performance without the human and ecological costs of retooling and ground up engineering.  Ah yes, the 650 is the SOHC for the thinking man. ;D

Man, you must be in advertising? What a fantastic description! Over here the answer would have been "Yeah mate, it's a parts-bin special", ha ha! ;D

I invite you all to join me at the shiny new CB650 forum which can be found at http://www.hondacb650.com

As I stated before, I found the old http://cb650.net invaluable as a resource and I just couldn't stand to see it go way....

BTW -- thanks to Vatch for giving me my tag line  :)

Thanks for starting the new site!

What work, or money, is required to maintain such a site?

I read several forums.
Another option would be to add bike specific sections to this site like;
400s, 550s, 650s, 750s etc. . .

Just a thought.

Honda took all the good parts they didn't use on the other sohc models and built the 650. ;D :D

We tried that once and it was generally panned as a bad idea.  These bikes all have a lot in common and it just made more sense to have a single tech forum for all models.  Splitting it up might work better with this forum software than when we tried it last and I'd be more than happy to do it if enough people asked.

It's only been nearly 2 months, but I cannot believe how impressive the '79 650 is. As posted elsewhere I found mine by fluke and it is well on it's way into the top 5 bikes I have ever owned.

The closest thing I've got to a 650 are 2 550s. I just got through checking out the 650 site
and it seems like things are going along pretty good. Hope things work out and the site grows and
prospers. I'm considering mixing some 650 engine parts w/my 550 lower end, would that qualify
me to join the group or would I be considered an outsider? Just wondering. Already there seems to
be a lot of life there and quite abit of info to be shared. Later on, Bill
