What is the most over-priced item?
« on: February 24, 2006, 02:48:02 PM »
What's the most outrageous price you have paid for a part?  Not the bike, just an item.  Was it worth it?  Did you know at the time it was too much but bought it anyway, or were you totally clueless?

After selling my Guzzi, I used some of the money to get a one-off aluminium tank for my 400.  I could have bought another very nice 400 for what I paid. It's useless and a pure conceit, but I don't have any kids, no cable TV, etc.  The bike is at another location, so I won't see what it looks like or how it fits 'till tomorrow after work.

In my oppinion its the carb rebuild kits for a '79 650. The absolute cheapest I have found them for is about $20 for each carb. Thats a bit much for a couple o-rings and gaskets.  I have found some cheaper on e-bay, but upon looking at the float bowl gaskets, they are the wrong ones (even though they are advertised as fitting mine). Beyond that I would have to say a head gasket. I am not willing to go with a cheap one, so I have to shell out $88 from Honda for one.

Bought a 350F last spring for $175 that was crusty but cleaned up nice. Paid the local Honda dealer $200 for a nos upper right exhaust that listed for $280 but he took pity on me cause it had a small ding in it. At the time I thought I paid too much. But recently a set of 4 nos pipes went for over 2K on Ebay. :o Now I don't feel so bad? :-\ This 350F stuff is a curious phenomenon.

A independent shop got my whole honda gasket kit for 650 at $130.
Dad found a couple aftermarket ones on ebay couple yrs ago.

I paid $90ish for a top quality o-ring chain.  Although the chain wasn't overpriced, I realized the o-ring portion was an unnecessary expense after reading opinions on this forum.

U.S. $140.00 with shipping for NOS 550 k0 chrome fork covers (ears)
After searching the various parts sources (without guarantee of availabilty), list price was more than what I paid on e bay. Felt a little better after that, these things don't exist any more.

I think it was 30$ or so for a set of used 750 oil lines.  I needed them now, cause the oil spot on floor was really pissing me off.  this wasn't a little spot either.  if the oil was good and warmed up, overnight sitting there would be a spot about the size of a sheet of paper on the floor.  anyway, I used buy it now and I got what I wanted and they work very well.  so I don't think I got ripped off.  Impatients cost a lot of money.

Hmmnnnnn lemme see, pre-Ebay, $400.00 for a CB350F seat, $500.00 for some NOS pipes for it, $90.00 for a new points cover, $270.00 for new sidecover and tank badges, blah blah blah! How about $4,400.00 to rebuild my BMW R100RS engine 14 years ago? I got to the stage where if I had to buy something from a dealer, I'd first apply a nice thick coating of vaseline or KY gel in anticipation! Ouch! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Quite right. I find that the amount of time it takes to do a project is directly proportional to the amount of money involved. If you want it done in a hurry, be prepared to spend a lot of money. If you want to spend a small amount of money, be prepared to bide your time.

A guy who's trying to sell a repainted candy gold Cb750 gas tank as sandcast for $800 in an ebay. As you know, there is no candy gold colored CB750 sandcast model because sandcast engine ended in #1007414 and candy gold CB750s weren't introduced until frame # 1019210 which puts it on a January 1970 production.

Lately I've been thinking the gasoline we feed to these beasts is the most overpriced item!

I'd first apply a nice thick coating of vaseline or KY gel in anticipation! Ouch!

Well put, Terry!

I just paid $72 CAD each for two new brake pistons at the honda dealer.  I thought quite a bit for just 1 piece of machined metal.   I didn't think brakes were the type of thing I should skimp on though.

Best purchase?  ebay, $10 for a complete set of working front forks for an 81 CB650.

It's boring, but I think just under $60.00 (CAN) is an almost  outrageous amount to pay for a 400F air filter.  However, that's the going price from Honda (or anywhere else).

At that price it's no wonder Honda still makes the things - surely the margin must be similar to the margin on the latest $200.00 running shoes.....

Are the air filters for other Honda 4's as expensive?  I would guess that for the 750 there are a few aftermarket choices too ....????

I thought redoing my seat at local upholsterer would be better than the "NOS" 200 dollar ones that show up on ebay all the time. I told the guy I wanted to budget 200 dollars or less, since I was keeping the work local (rather than some ebay scammer getting the dough) saving the original seat pan, rubber blocks and strap. I got the pan bead blasted, repainted, with new vinyl -- it looks sweet and is pretty comfortable. The final price though was closer to 300 bucks...especially with labor!

Is is like a bad mastercard commercial ... lesson learned: priceless.

Zane,
David Silver spares has the 400F filter for 11 GBP or 8 GBP, depending on whether you want the OEM filter or a pattern one.

Gordon, well - that sounds better.....

But how do you get them shipped?  I've found ones in Europe for less than 20 bucks Canadian, but by the time I pay for shipping it works out to close to what I'm paying here.....

Regardless, thanks for the tip - I'll pursue it, most certainly.

I don't know about shipping to Canada, but their shipping to the states is usually about the same as domestic suppliers, sometimes less, and usually faster.
