I'm in the UK and bought a recessed ignition switch of ebay for $90 +shipping, thought I must be mad, bought another for $45+shipping and sold the first one, sold no bother for $150 +shipping and sent it to of all places JAPAN
Gary

Smart move. Japanese and even UK boys pay ridiculously high prices for bikes and parts. That's why America lost so many classic bikes, I saw many used US spec CB750 and Z1s selling for over $10,000! I personally prefer "Buy Cheap, Sell Cheap" mentality, though I've been doing most of the former because I regretted all the bikes I sold. Recently I bought a 1972 CB750K2 parts bike for $200, used some of the parts to restore a better CB750K2 I have to full stock then spent another $90 to bring the parts bike to near stock.

I paid $25 for mine but discovered that it has the same chipped front as my old ones. Early Honda plastic sidecovers are pretty brittle now so take caution when removing or installing them. Because of this little mishap, I decided to repaint the more inferior one and get another gas tank to match it.

Impatients cost a lot of money.
Quite right. I find that the amount of time it takes to do a project is directly proportional to the amount of money involved. If you want it done in a hurry, be prepared to spend a lot of money. If you want to spend a small amount of money, be prepared to bide your time.

I'm in a perpetual remodel of my house--kinda like an old bike project and a lot bigger--and I've found that any estimate I make will take twice as much money and three times as long as I figure.

Sad storey:  Several years ago I sold the bottom end if a 150 Dream motor on Ebay.  I put USA only in the ad.  Got an email from a guy (bloke) in England who asked if I would ship to him if he bid on it.  I explained that I thought the shipping cost would be too high, but he could bid if he wanted.  He won it then checked the shipping cost.  Then he asked me if I would ship it to someone in Florida who would strip off the parts he wanted and ship them.  I said I'd strip the parts at no cost if he wanted so he could save one of the shipping costs.  I sent the parts he wanted at about $80.00 (for a $25.00 final bid).  Six or seven weeks later he emailed me again and said it turned out to be the wrong motor.  He admitted it was his fault, though.

Labor charges for tire mounting have been the worst.  So far it has been about $150 to buy a tire and have it mounted and balanced.  That's with me rolling tha damn thing in the door.  They don't have to remove or install the wheel!  I'll be doing my own mounting and balancing one day.

I found wheel bearings seals at a local industrial supply shop for 1/3 of what Honda wanted.  Same thing with carb parts.  I went to a bike shop and they got me the Honda part for half what Honda wanted.  It seems if you shop around, fair priced parts are out there.

Having done all my own tyre changes when I was younger, I'm quite happy to watch someone else do it.

£76 for my Avon Roadrunner (rear, 500/4) - the guy makes most of his money at race meetings and took the R/H exhausts off to get the rear wheel out!  I did tell him about removal of the tensioners and spindle, but only when I took him his cup of tea - and by then he'd almost finished...

I agree 100%. Actually, did my first (and last  >:() tire mounting a year ago. Next set will be someone elses challenge and I will be happy to pay them.

The doing price on Ebay for a right side cover for a 81 CB750Custom is over $150 if you can find one. The left side cover is $20. The wife stopped me from makeing an offer of $160.

I think your wife should handle your finances Tom, I wouldn't pay $160.00 for the whole bike! "Behind every great man is a woman shaking her head and rolling her eyes" Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

LOL, I know it's the SOHC forum that I have been a member of for several years and I loved my 77 CB750K but I got a deal on the DOHC in mint condition minus the side cover. Now to get to run as good as the 750K. I do have my eyes on a mint 77 750k that hasn't run for 7 years. Buy them for $500 and make a profit.
I still want the side cover! ::)

OK OK My turn to tell the tale of woe.

How about A$ 78 for the lower brake hose on a CB 750 & A$3 each for the banjo washers.
and to top it off I got stung A$80 to have my two (2) instrument covers chrome plated.
Good job though but compared with A$120 for a front wheel Chrome job!!!

Terry's right!!, olive oil or KY would have been the GO go.

Hey Dave, I never mentioned Olive oil mate, that's just sick! Ha ha, you can take the boy out of the Navy, but you obviously can't take the Navy out of the boy!  ;D

$650 for the lovely 4 into 1 exhaust system on my 400f, headers to muffler. Insanely expensive (and why, anyway!), but will look absolutely brilliant once mounted on my freshly painted motor!

Handlebar controls seem pricey too. NOS from $75 per side. These are only switches folks, for for that price, none too reliable, I should say.

While I'm carping, my oversize pistons were $250. That seems like alot for 4 shot glass sized poppers!

The most overpriced item is the last few parts you need for that "factory correct" restoration. $400.00 for an NOS candy ruby red 69 750 sidecover. $150.00 for tank emblem. I don't even want to talk about pipes. Eli

I find the general rule of thumb is whatever part you need badly to keep the progress on your project moving is the insane part at that time. After you sheel out big bucks for it during the following months the market is flooded with them at decent prices. ;D
