Trailering my '80 650. Input?
« on: August 29, 2010, 01:16:06 PM »
Thinking of hauling my 80 CB650 to Northern Minnesota for the Labor Day weekend.  Maybe do some North Shore on Superior trips.   Figure 1000 miles round trip with the trailer...

Should I leave the bike on the center stand while strapped or leave it on the wheels then strapped?  I have a nice 10x6 utility trailer that has made the trip many times with my 3-wheelers.  First time pulling it with my '92 Jeep Cherokee though.

The trailer has 2x8 plank flooring so I thought I would screw some wheel guides to prevent the bike from "washing out".  Was also thinking of screwing some padded metal bars through the rims/floor to keep the bike from lifting over bumps.  Or would that be overkill?

Any input on this?

You could screw in a guide to hold the front wheel in but I have always just used a ratchet strap and tied the front wheel to the front of the trailer, works perfect if there is a little vertical support beam in the front of the trailer. Looks like yours has it.

Make sure to preload the forks as much as possible when you strap it down. As for the back end bouncing around just find two points to strap it down snug and it should be good. That way the bike will absorb a little of the bumps, might be easier on the bike.

Don't put it on the center stand. I would use 5 straps, 2 in the back and 3 in front [1 holding the front wheel as Shen suggested]. Pull over and check the straps periodically.

Have fun!

Push tire up front and reload front shocks on the the side stand.

One pull strap from each side of the handlebar hooked down low on the trailer. Keep cinching it tight while keeping the forks loaded a bit.

One pull strap from each side of the rear hooked low on trailer with just a bit more pull on the left side.

At least that's how I was taught ;D

Here's a good one.
