Author Topic: Bought myself a '70 CB750K0 ... (Read 18431 times)

Today, I have bought myself a nearly original 1970 CB750K0. The bike has only 5000 miles and is imported from the USA to Holland in 1987. It has never had a Dutch license, so the bike is bought by the former owner in 1987 and stored in a shed. The former owner passed away and he left over 30 bikes, this bike included.
The engine runs great, no bad noises, only the clutch is stuck. Almost all bolts and other parts are original, the seat is in great shape, the paint is very nice, some little dents and the air filter house has a small crack. Even the tires are original.

You will understand that I am currently one of the happiest men in Holland!

Nice...and interesting. The gauges and ignition switch appear to be K1....is the serial number in the 40,000 ?

Indeed, it is 10400.. Does that mean that the gauges are right?

It was a transitional time....K0 to K1 .....I thought it came later in the mid 40,000's .....I'll let the K1 experts chime in on this.....not sure about the gauges.

I think you are correct there. The front caliper is K1 too. The older KO calipers were silver. Your bike was in the era of getting ready to switch over to the K1 model. Be glad you do not have the recessed ignition switch on the early models. They are going for $700 on ebay. Any may I add it is a beautiful KO there!!! Nice find...enjoy it and the envious looks you will get.

Then it seems that this bike is more rare than the previous ones?

Also the emblems at the side covers are black, while the most of them have gold emblems

Be very careful with the airbox and side covers,they will be destroyed if gas gets on them.

What a sweet find!

Lucky man...

My 2 pence' worth of thoughts?: the black front caliper was possibly installed because the raw aluminum silver one suffered a worse fate than those fork cap bolts! They used to corrode quickly, and the pucks would stick in place, no brakes...the "K1 caliper" was plated (anodized) to reduce the corrosion, then painted black to boot. They just worked better...

Even the chrome on that shot of the HM300 pipes looks a lot like the original 'old factory' pipe chrome: not so glossy, and with polishing marks still clearly visible in their finish: very common on the K0.

I saw many of those genre with more than 80,000 miles on their tickers.

The stuck clutch (if I understand what you mean) is not a big deal. I think you mean that the clutch won't disengage. You pull the clutch, pop it into gear and the bike dies. If that's so, you can usually "un-stick" it by starting the bike - warm it up. Then push the bike (I like to roll down a driveway) to get enough speed so you can shift into first gear. Once in first gear, hold the clutch in and accelerate and decelerate hard. It usually takes only a couple cycles of this to un-stick a clutch that's been sitting for years.

which would be in 70 inly...

But, they may have been painted... $:-\$

The bike hasn't been repainted. The paint is clearly original.

Looks good mate, from what I can see the gauges are K1, as is the caliper, chain guard and ignition switch, but like has been said above, it could be that Honda had run out of K0 parts by the time yours rolled off the assembly line, or just that those parts were replaced as they wore out, or as a result of accident damage. hi Terry,

you wrote that also the chain guard is a K1 one, but as far as I know does also the K0 have a plastic chain guard. or am I wrong?

I am sure that this bike didn't have been in an accident, there are no scratches or so on certain places

No... no language problems at all. Clarifying is good to make sure we've got the problem "cased out". Also it's good for others that may learn something from or correct what we're saying

You are correct sir...the KO & K1 have a plastic chain guard. The difference is the KO is shorter than the K1. It was made longer for the K1 because the automatic chain oiler was throwing oil all over the place. I have seen the KO chain guard on eBay, but it sold for over $300. I have attached a picture of the KO chain guard for you. For kicks I also attached the aftermarket bottom half chain guard that came out later to catch some of that oil splatter. In the parts list, Honda mentions two different parts for the K0 chain guard: 40510-300-040B until 1021879 and from 1021880 part nr. 40510-300-040B. The chain guard on the second picture is different from mine. The edge of my guard is more bended outwards.

I can't imagine that one of the previous owners have replaced the guard. Maybe someone has a picture of the K1 guard?

Here are a couple pics of a K1 with the longer chainguard. You can see in the side pic that it reaches almost to the rim.
