Help diagnosing hard to shift when hot?
« on: August 24, 2010, 10:31:55 AM »

Apologies if this is covered somewhere already, but I searched and couldn't find anything.

I have a 75 CB550 that runs fine for about 60 miles, but then it's hard to find neutral and 1st and 2nd are a little rough too.  When I pick up speed again it's ok.

This happens every day on the way home.  Idle is below 1500.  Changed the oil 500 miles ago.  Replaced clutch plates and cable last year.

Don't know if it's relevant, but I just put a new chain on it.  I also did my first valve adjustment, but I think it might be slightly off.  Would this affect it?

Thanks in advance for any help in the right direction.

Poor quality oil.

Poor clutch adjustment.

Warped clutch discs.

One or more of the above.

Thanks very much for the quick response.

One more question, the manual I have is a little vague here.

Should mark number 1 or mark number 2 be lined up with the mark on the clutch cover?  And does anyone know what the other mark is for?

Thanks again.

I think it is the inward dimple on the arm that should match up.
But, I've been doing it via "feel" for quite a long time.  I'm not sure how to describe that though.  It helps to understand how the mechanism works.

I'll readjust before I leave work and see what happens.  Thanks again.

Mine is the bottom dimple.  Not sure where yours picked up the little zit.  I'd go through the adjustment procedure again.  Remember, loosen everything and start at the adjustment screw at the bottom to align the dimple.  I think you should have like 5-10mm of free play at the lever when your done.
