Cylinder head oil leak
« on: September 16, 2010, 08:04:19 PM »
Hello to all, again,
Got my 550 registered yesterday and rode it twenty miles or so. When I stopped I found my right knee had been well oiled. I've read the posts about o-ring leakage on the head(76 CB550). I called the PO and was told that he had installed the individual air filter pods and never rejetted. The bike overheated and started leaking oil. He replaced the head gasket but not the o-rings and never rode it much after that. The front right side of the head/cylinder joint is leaking really bad. Should I take the top end off and have it mic'd and machined or just do the head gasket and o-rings? If it needs machining how much material can be removed from cylinder block/ head before it causes problems?
And finally' I could feel a lean surge even with 120 main jets. It's the worst at mid throttle. Would picking the needles up a groove or two solve this or would I need to go with a bigger idle jet? Does 120 sound about right for a 550 thats stock other than the air cleaners? Also, I'm trying to push to get this bike done before the Oct 3 Super Sunday at Marcus Dairy in Danbury, CT. If anyone will be there from the forum I'd love to meet up. Super Sundays are a great time and definitely worth the ride. If I get the bike done, I'll see you there! BTW thanks for all the help. Love the site and the positive attitudes.

120 sounds a bit big unless the exhaust is aftermarket as well, pointless doing gasket without "O" rings and doing base as well. i believe up to 10 thou combined skim is OK
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Thanks for the input. Always appreciate tips from the guys in the trenches. The top end will be coming off this weekend. My local honda dealer has an aftermarket complete engine gasket set for $95.00. Supposedly made by the company that makes the gaskets for honda. They say the head gasket alone from Honda O.E.M. is $85.00. Any advantage to using all Honda gaskets/o-rings for rebuild? Thanks for the help again.
