Transport Basket Case in a Station Wagon? CA DMV advice?
« on: November 04, 2010, 08:54:32 AM »
So I've got a line on what looks to be a smokin deal on a 1975 550F basket case w/ a spare motor.  It's 150 miles away, and I'm considering making a site-unseen offer and driving up to pick it up.  Has anyone transported a complete basket case in a station wagon with the seats folded flat?  I have a new Jetta TDI.

I have.. moved in a buddy’s Volvo…

We removed the gas tank….unbolted the bars and with the slack we positioned them parallel with the frame.  The rear tire doesn’t gain you that much space…so I left it on…
I removed the speedo cable and the front tire… The fender points straight up with the body on it’s side.. ( use a moving blanket in case there are any fluids that run.)

I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get it all to fit, hopefully it's all there!  Road trip!

How does one chose which engine to use when there are two?  Breakdown both and use the cases with matching numbers and cherry pick the best set of internals?

Unless you have the bucks, knowledge and time for splitting the engines I would use the numbers match engine and try not to get too buried in projects.

Honda numbers rarely/never match, engine and frame come together on production line already numbered.

Ahh, so from a DMV perspective, there is no reason not to use the better of the two motors?  I guess I'll just have to crack into both top ends at least and have a look.

Just check the 'Title' on that, I think I read somewhere that some states use the frame number and some the engine, very confusing to me as a Brit where we use both.

Onewheel.. IF the bike has a California title, it will probably list both the frame and engine number. Unless the registration is current, the California DMV will want to see the complete bike (not just the frame/motor or a pile of parts) before they will let you register. That fact alone is giving me fits!

The only way I can see to get around this craziness is to title the chassis in state that doesn't list the engine number, build the bike completely, and then take it to the DMV. Obviously, rolling in a chopper with a Santee frame is gonnna be a problem unless you want to go through the Specially Constructed nightmare, or take your just finished motorcycle and cut it up for the chopper VIN number and pray that you never get stopped by the CHP.

If your registration is active and still on the books, you might not to have to take the bike in, but you could also owe many years of back registration fees that, with penalties, could be several hundred dollars. All in all, it's a frackin' nightmare unless you are trying to register a currently registered, complete bike that looks like it will run.

If anyone out there in California has better info on this, please PM me. I don't have all that much hair left to pull out!   :-\  RR

i brought home my 1973 cb750 chopper with 4 boxes of extra parts and 2 sets of tires and wheels  in my 1997 vw passat 4 door the guy said it couldn't be done i bet him that if i stripped the bike down and got into the car with nothing sticking out within 5 minutes or less he would have to knock off a hundred bucks off the price so bottom line i bought my bike with a ton of parts for $350.00 everybody used to tease me about how much i liked playing the game tetris it paid off :)

James, there is now no doubt in my mind it can be done!

Ricky, very valid advice.  I don't know the status of the title but I will certainly ask before I drive up to the SFV to check it out.  So worst case, it's out of the DMV system, previously titled w/ both frame and engine number listed, and I would need to completely reassemble to running condition, have it inspected, pay hundreds in back fees?  Best case, it is registered non-op and I could just restore the registration in my name after the project is complete?

I couldn't really find any other DMV project advice, so if anyone else has experience, I'd love to hear it.

By the way I'm pretty damn excited to have you guys as a sounding board for my trials and tribulations as I dive into a station wagon full of parts.  Time to take the plunge....now if only the guy would call me back... :P

Check both motors to make sure they will turn over before you commit to either.  If one is stuck and one isn't the decision is pretty easy.  If both are stuck then it is a case of which has the best top end to rebuild.

Any easy way to check if they're stuck/free if they're pulled off the bike?  The pic of the one motor looks like the shift lever has been removed.  I would imagine I would need to get it into gear and turn the crank somehow.  Remove points cover and turn w/ wrench? Tricks anyone?

OWD, if it's out of the system, you won't owe any back registration but you will have to have a frame and motor that match the title unless (as I said earlier) you somehow register the frame in another state and then later register the completed bike in California. You can check the VIN number on the DMV.gov website.

Good luck OWD. Keep us apprised! Everyone here wants to help.  :)  RR

Thanks RR.

Here is a quote from the seller, "frame and engines are not registerd but the DMV says the numbers are clean so there would be no problem registering it."

And btw I just wiki'd OWD, thought I wasn't up on the forum lingo...turns out I'm just an idiot...  ;D
