Starter Cover Gaskets - CB550 (Info Needed)
« on: November 14, 2013, 05:22:17 PM »
Hey All,

I am back at it again trying to fulfill some needs expressed by a few fellow 550 riders; the starter cover gasket. Many just need this one part and while they do come in partial or complete gasket sets, it can get expensive quick. I promised to look into this part as my headlight washer and points cover gasket endeavor has shown promise. Mooshie has sent me her 550's (Dash) used gasket and I'd like to verify dimensions with anyone who has an unused one floating around.

Width: 3.081"
Length: 5.906"
Depth: 0.111" - 0.118"

The tolerance is to the thou because I used the calipers sitting in front of me. I don't think I'd need that tolerance for verification, but the more detail the better for me right now.

Cheers,
-Alex

its never a perfect seal,i just run a bead of silcone on the cover and let it harden then fit the cover, unless your a concours type it wont matter.

My stock seal fit like crap. My replacement seal fit like crap. I'm sure my second replacement seal (got another gasket set) will fit like crap.

Like dave said, I just ran a bead of silicone and called it a day. If nobody chimes in by tomorrow, I'll go out and mic my new seal.

Same problem I've had with all of mine gents. Just crap fit. Since I was asked to make some up, I figured I'd get as much info as possible prior to replicating the same ole stuff.

Uh Oh....Crush posted some dimensions.....now I can make my owwwwwwwnnnn ! HA
Are those the dims of the stock gasket or the inside of the actual cover? I would just measure the cover and scrap the stock gasket ,the cover was just stamped crap, maybe thats why the gaskets fit like crap. Trying to fit a flat gasket between a milled alloy surface frame and a stamped curvey POS....CRUSH! lets make some alloy starter covers!....as soon as I finish that airbox for Andy.

Haha! It was the used gasket I was looking at because it's all I had handy but I'll grab my starter cover today and take a look. I agree that those dimensions will prove more meaningful, but by all means start making them based off the dimensions I posted! :P

I've been saying for a while now that we need to meet up and talk about some work. Let's f-ing do it when life allows.

I do the same for my 750 where the air filter halves come together the points cover well all the covers that are removed often for the 3K service works perfect better than the cork points cover.

I ran a small bead of silcone along the edges.  Then held/stretched the neoprene gasket to the corners with clothes pins and let it sit till the silicone dried.

Glad to see you are getting this going Crush...sorry my crappy old gasket wasn't much help.  And I agree with the others the new gasket that I replaced the one with was just as awful--
Alloy starter covers sounds good!

Can't you just measure the inside of the cover?

I run a thin bead of silicone on the inside of the cover and glue the gasket in place. No problems.

To me it seems like the cover is supposed to sit ON the gasket, which is why it's so wide (big difference in ID and OD).

All I wanted to know was whether folks saw a need to improve dimensions. I appreciate the suggestions about silicone and techniques for making them stay (I use weatherstrip adhesive). Ultimately I do not want to reproduce the same gasket if I can make one that is better than what's available now.

Thus the question being put out to the masses.

Lisa, thanks for the gasket. It is nice to have one around...regardless of condition.  ;D

ha ha, well please improve upon it.  the ones I have gotten since were just as awful.  I would say the ones they sell are too wide.  Length seems to be okay but damned if the width goes in nicely (unlike with your points cover gasket which is perfect).
