Question on motor mounts for 550K
« on: August 23, 2010, 08:29:13 PM »
Hello,

I bought this 77 550k earlier this year. It was a dirty beat up beast. I let my impatients get the better of me and bought it. Price wasn't bad, just alot more work than I had anticipated.

Anyway, I ended up taking it down to the bare frame. I was careful to label, bag and photograph as much as possible. I have stripped and re-painted the frame and motor, now I am ready to put the motor back in. I am looking at the motor mounts and trying to figure them out.

My question is on the long upper rear bolt, there is a part called the coller that fits over the bolt. According to the parts diagram it is the left side upper.

Just want to know where this goes and what it's for. I couldn't find it in any of the pictures I took (of course) and can't see it showing what it's purpose is in any of the diagrams or shop manual.

Any help would be great.

Here is a pic of the bolt with the collar on it.

That bolt is the upper rear bolt, the collar is a spacer on the left side between the engine & frame, the bracket is for the right side. I believe the spacer just makes it easier to install the engine. It will make sense when you install the engine.

Thanks,

I thought that might be the case, I just didn't want to have to try and figure it out while I was grappling with the motor.

I'll post up a pic when I get the motor mounted.

I have found it easier to lay the engine on it's left side and lower the frame over the engine, that is of course if the bike is stripped to the bare frame. If not stripped, I remove the breather from the top of the valve cover and the oil filter(obvious) but without the breather, I get a little more wiggle room. HTH.
