shifts hard
« on: August 16, 2017, 11:32:58 AM »
Trying to get the 78 cb750k to shift more smoothly.  Currently, it takes more toe effort than I'm used to to shift gears.  It's causing me to occasionally miss gears if I'm not really aggressive on the upshift especially from first to second.  Just got this bike on the road and would like it easier to ride.

Proper cable adjustment at both ends?
Oil designed for wet clutches?

How old is the oil? Agreed with above, start with clutch basket adjustment, the cable adjustment. What oil are you using? My 750 k4 shifted poorly as the oil got older. But it also never really shifted wel until I did hondaman's clutch mod, rebuild the oil pump and replaced the seals suppliants oil to the shift mechanism. Now it's buttery smooth

I am using honda 10w 40 and it is fresh changed.  My cable at the clutch lever has a just a little slack in it.  I have not adjusted the clutch basket.  I'll start there.

My 78 750 was shifting hard and slipping a gift too.  It's hot here in summer and the hotter it got the more it slipped.    I put Castro motorcycle oil for wet clutch like the type shown here but used 20w 50..... Never had a problem shifting again.

Just a heads up on this oil... here in Manitoba our temps went down to 15 deg Celsius  (59 F) yesterday and my bike took about 30 minutes to 'warm up' for obvious reasons. It definately doesn't take long to warm up in that temp with recommended oil.  So to be clear, using this oil is a 'my engine is hot, the weather is hot, my trans slips and is hard to shift out of neutral' solution... it is not a fix all solution for these bikes.  Also, if trans issues persist... it's probably more than just oil.

The trans tends to get a little fickle when it is very hot or when the oil is old... so if you are running in cooler weather and you are having this problem, then the oil might not be the issue or at least, the thickness may not be the issue, you may just need new oil or trans work...

Not getting into a debate here about oil... that's been beat'n to death.
