Setting tappets on 80 CB650 Custom, how to get them to stay set?
« on: September 03, 2010, 03:58:16 AM »
I've developed a weird vibration at 6k rpms and above, and I seem to be missing the usual valve train noise, though that could be due to the 20w-50 that's in there. I initially thought it was due to a missing frame bolt, so I put in a new one and all seemed well. The vibration is admittedly much less than it was when the bolt was missing, but I'm beginning to wonder if my intake valves have tightened up to less than .002. Since the motor hadn't ran for several years I expected to have to reset the tappets a few times, but it's been a little over a month and several hundred miles (3 or 400 at least) and it seems like I shouldn't have to do this anymore. I'm going on a longer ride tomorrow so after work I plan on checking the valve adjustments. If the intakes are lower than .002 should I just leave them, adjust them to .003 and hope it adjusts to about .002, or set my torque wrench to the highest torque rating suggested in the manual and go to town?

Thanks,

Brandon
