Went on a poker run...
« on: September 12, 2011, 09:14:41 AM »
yesterday.  I was the only SOHC4 on the entire trip out of around 540 bikes (although its possible i missed one).  There were a couple of newer crotch rockets (a ninja and an R1) i saw a couple old Triumphs and one new one.  My friend rode his 75/6 BMW.  There were a couple newer BMW's.  Almost every other bike was a Harley (or some other type of big V) or a Goldwing.  I cant say i was really suprised, but i did feel a bit out of place.  I did meet one other rider at a gas station on a newer Honda V-Twin who told me he used to have a 78 supersport.  Bike ran great all day, and when i got home almost 200 miles later it was still starting using the button, so my charging system seems to be still working.  All in all a good day.

have ridden mine all over central indiana, and into evansville.  its always nice when even the old harley riders take notice of a slightly beaten up old 750 honda.  rode my GL1100 Interstate to HogRock in Southern Illinois and was treated with respect.
Believe it or not, its not always about being on a harley at some of these gatherings, but about being on a bike regardless of make.

yea, even though i felt out of place, i never felt like i was looked down on.  There were quite a few people who stopped to look at my friends and my bikes.  We were definately something different for people to look at lol

I'm a little put off by being the only guy on an old Honda at those kind of things too.  I once declined a funeral ride for a WW2 vet because I was on a Japanese bike.  My friends told me I was thinking way too hard about it...

I agree with your friends.  If anyone is bothered by where your bike was made, that's their problem, not yours, and they would most likely be in the minority.

Yeah, those warriors fought against the country of Japan, not the Honda corporation.

I have noticed around my area that most of the older Harley riders have a little soft spot in their hearts for the old Honda's and Honda 750's.Seem a lot have a story or two or owned one in their younger days. Everbody had a first bike or two at some point and a Honda 4 was the thing in the day--------

Or smart people understand the history of these bikes and acknowledge it.

One particular poker ride ended up at the local Hooters which is next to the Harley shop where I live. I really didn't think about it until I pulled up and dismounted. Then I though," Oh $&^*" when a bunch of the Harley crowd came over to me.
They all had stories about a CB750 or Super Sport that was their first bike or whatever. They were all pretty cool about my bike.  We had a great afternoon telling stories about all the bikes. I ended up with some new friends. It was cool 8)

You should feel out of place next to a Harley riders, since you are on a real motorcycle and they on a fashion accessory. Were they dressed as pirates? I love to get stuck behind a poker run. There should be more of them.

Alright, if you want to start a Harley bashing thread by all means start it- elsewhere.

I too went on a poker run last saturday in memory of a fallen biker friend.  Yes, he rode and fixed harleys but he knew lots about all bikes - even Hondas.  Once in a while he would comment to a Harley rider ' what stage is that bike".  Knowing full well that the rider hadn't done the work or even know what it entailed.
Of course, the ride was predominately HD but it was suprising how many came to me and commented on my honda ( 400F cafe).  Most often whey would let it slip that they had an old Honda years ago.

The run went well and we raised 750.00 for the SPCA.  Lucky me, I won the 50/50 draw and got the other 750.00.  Rather than buy the boys and girls a drink that they probably didn't need at that time, i took 200.00 of the wins and presented this to the SPCA rep.
I don't want it to go like a motorcycle, I want it to go like a rocket!
