How do you seal a muffler to 4into1 pipes
« on: October 19, 2010, 05:22:39 PM »
Note to self: use red threadlock on all bolts. I lost the muffler. Ok, didn't lose it, I lost the baffle-couldn't find it after it fell off when I went back to get the muffler. Doesn't matter. It's D-stroyed.

Anyway, I have the old muffler and I was wondering how to get a good seal between the 4 into 1 pipes and the old muffler. Can I just walk into an auto store and buy some gasket material?

I had some thin stuff called "Tiger Seal" that was a papery stuff I used with the now destroyed muffler, but the old muffler needs something a little thicker.

Thanks

A muffler shop can expand a piece of pipe into a coupler to use between two different diameter pipes.  Way more secure than wrap and seals better also.  Clamps and slits still needed but the clamp can be rotated out of site for a clean look.  My muffler shop does it for free.

Thanks. Can they do this while the pipes are on the bike?

They can come close with some exact ID, OD measurements or a sample of each diameter of tubing.  I keep some old exhaust around for purposes like this.  They can also bend the coupler so you can have any "sweep" up, down, or level you want.
