tank badge removal
« on: February 28, 2006, 01:58:52 PM »
i thought i saw a guide or at least an explanation on these boards before on how to properly (delicately) remove the tank badges... can't seem to find it now.

i have a '78 750F and the tank is going to be re-painted... looking for some insight into removing the badges so that i won't damage them at all.

Well I have a 78k which hasa different tank but I just had to unscrew 2 bolts on each badge to get them off.

The badges are an "interference" fit - ie plastic pins go into holes in the metal.  Use a blunt knife and carefully ease them off. If you're going to repaint anyway, you don't have to worry about chipping the paint. Just don't break the badges (more eBay expense!)

I'm assuming you don't have screws on your tank badges (or you wouldn't have asked the question ?)

Hey Superchode,

If you have an earlier 750K series.......
I have heard of several different techniques for removing the tank badges.

Some use a thin and pliable putty knife to slide behind the badge and gently pry along the edges, top and bottom, until it starts to come free, keeping the pressure even so as not to over stress any one particular section.

I have heard of single edged razor blades being used in the same manner.

I have also heard of someone who swore by fishing line, of a great enough strength, and slipping that behind the badge with line sticking out from the top of the badge and the bottom of the badge, then gently but firmly pulling on both ends of the fishing line, working it back and forth, that is, left and right, keeping the amount of pulling pressure on the top and the bottom the same.

I am sure there are other methods that I have not heard of, but creative thinking can devise new methods too..............  Good Luck with whatever route you take........ ;D

My 175 has two badges each side; one screwed in and one the friction fit.  Whichever method you try, work a little bit at a time, and all around.  Don't pry one side all the way up then the other or you'll bend/stress/snap off th little posts.  And pry up just a bit and try to find where the posts are - if you pry too far away from the post, you may bend the badge a bit.
