The story in the original post neglects to mention that the Marine was suffering from PTSD. Unable to get the help he desperately needed, he had already physically assaulted his wife and lost his visitation rights with his children. The only reason he joined the armed forces in the first place was to get a college grant. Now his family is ripped apart and he faces criminal charges. Furthermore he is thrown out of school, and is still suffering from crippling anxiety and depression.
That sounds a bit more realistic to me.
Obviously the story is a parable intended to illustrate a specific moral value. People who pass these along reveal their simple mindedness and their lack of capacity for critical thinking. This particular gem here was offensive to the Marine Corp., Believers and Atheists, and Americans.
