General Jetting Question: 4-4 to 4-1 pipes
« on: February 26, 2006, 06:11:54 PM »
Hey All:

I just bought a set of 4-1 Hookers for my 80 cb650.  I've been on the lookout for some time now, and my stock pipes are in bad shape.  I've been trying to avoid some of the currently available 4-1s out there because some claim they have poor finish, etc.

Anyway, I don't know anything about these pipes, just that they are new in box and I picked 'em up for 200 bucks.  Couldn't find any info on oil filter or centerstand compatibility or anything.  We'll see.....

In general, what do you all think I'll need to do to make these work?  I have stock jetting and airbox, but my air filter is some kind of foam replacement.  If I really need to get crazy with the jetting I might let the area pros work on it, but I'm curious if I can at least try them without changing the jetting.

Thanks,

Zeke

Youll get many many answers on this.   Put them on and see how it runs.  You might have to raise the needles or change main jets.  Where you at?

Well, last week i put a 4-1 on with the original jets and carb setup and today when I took it out, the bottom end was okay, but it ran WAYY to rich on the top.  I'm gonna try and drop down to a 90 main jet, and I also moved the main needle to the second clip position

you may have to rejet. I would guess that you will have to richen the needle at least. but changing the exhaust does not change the rate of fresh air flow nearly as much as changing the intake (pods/K$N)...as long as you are running a muffler...which I dont....I run an open header which is a bit looser.

Thanks for the replies, y'all.

I'm in Santa Cruz, CA.  Tried to post this the other night but my e-er-net was out.  And power.

So, I should look into getting some richer jets.  I think they are 95 right now, and I'm assuming that's stock.

What sucks is that you can't move the needle without shims, so fine tuning can be a #$%*.

If it's running lean, is there a possibility of doing any damage?  That's what I'm really wondering.

Lean means hot!  blue pipes, not good for the engine either.:o  Don't run it for weeks with the lean set up.

Guys:

The pipes came yesterday -- holy #$%*.  They are NOS, perfect shape, thick steel..

The look like they may be double-walled headers!  Yeehaa.  I feel very lucky to have snagged these for 200 bucks.

Bad news, is that they won't work with the centerstand.   :( :(

Oh well, they look so sweet I think I'll use them anyway.  The data sheet with them says that they are only for racing -- what does that mean?  Loud?  Baffle looks pretty open to me.

Also says that the stock airbox is very restrictive.  Should I consider doing pods with this pipe?  What are the downsides?

Once again you have asked aquestion that will get many responces. Here's my two cents:

The general opinion here on the boards seem to be that that guys and gals at Honda knew what they were doing when they designed the air boxes for these bikes, so you should be fine if you deside to keep it - just use a good, performance air filter, like a K&N or one of there competitors that provide high volume air flow.

I have pods on my bike. So far I have not had any problems with them. Other people have, so take that as you will.

Hope this helps.

It was an ebay score.  Lucky they didn't wait until riding weather, eh?  I'm sure they would have gone for more than double that.

Yeah, I'll try to take one and post it tonight.
