Just got my bike for a good price(I think)...paid $500 for it(talked down from $1000).
It has a few small issues, but over all its in good shape. Just trying to get started up at the moment needs a battery and start button, but I've barely had it 2 days.
here's some picks...  Haven't decided on what to build it into..not going stock. I plan on getting a 550SS after this one.

looks likes it just needs a good bath. Good buy for $500. How does it run? Except for the pipes seems to be all stock. As nice as this bikes seems to be I myself would keep it stock, I just like the stockers.

Welcome to the forum, and good luck with your 750 ;)

So you've already picked out the good parts eh?
In truth...I'm not sure what I'm going to keep or remove yet. Only that I will not be going stock.
Still torn between this look:

and this one:

or somewhere in between.

I really like the cleaner look of "hidden battery, electronics and oil can"

GUess we'll see. The seat is original w/ no tears and the tanks has no rust or dents too!

Well.... I know its been a while so I'm posting my progress... Lots of pics so Fair Warning!
The first "set" of pics will be the tear down...Then the seat and a "quickie" photoshop pic bash of what Im more or less going for (not set in stone) then The tank stripped and primed.

I'm hoping this is the worst of it and I'm open to ideas on how to "fix" it.

I still think its was worth every penny of the $500 I spent!

It will NOT be this seat, but THESE colors (this one's from a motoguzi?)

It'll be THIS seat, but w/ red piping and stitching as above.

Here's the photoshop pic bash of what I'm kinda going for.

Tank was stripped. NO BONDO! yay! there WAS a couple of little dings. You can kinda see the big one there on the lower left. Its isn't much and barely noticeable up close, but I'll have a paintless dent repair take care of it.

Here's the "other" one.

TANK IS PRIMED!!!!! more to follow after the seat comes back from the upholsterer.

I'm holding off on the paint until the seat comes back so I can see what design will look best.

Don't worry. I'm going through the engine this month. I've already done a little preliminary snooping and the gears behind the shifter were pristine. The oil was nice and transparent and clean. I didn't even notice any gunk in the screen and the oil looked brand new as i drained it. It was fairly well kept (engine wise anyway. The carbs looked pretty clean too at first inspection, but I wont know for sure until they come apart. I can already see I'll need to replace all the engine gaskets...just good idea as a rule. I'm replacing all the phillips heads w/ hexes and I'm redoing all the wiring and re-sleeving all the wiring. I build custom pc's and its a pet peave of mine to have good wiring.

example of what I call good sleeving:

With all the time spent on these bikes I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to take the pains to make the wiring as clean as possible. I'm doing the whole harness this way and setting it up modularly with labels to what goes where so I can trace issues and remove one section at a time as needed.

Also going to go w/ drag bars and powder coating the frame and anything I can in a satin black.

No cheap CB's I can find in Central Tx.  :(

Guess I'm just not looking hard enough.

Yup, ain't that right!  It is kinda forcing me to look at other bikes for myself.  I can't find them either and maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

Well, thanks for all the replies and feedback.
To answer a few questions...
The 2 mobos shown are not mine...just some examples off the net, but I DO have 3 different W/C PC's.
I'd be happy to sell or trade any parts I don't use...mirror, handle bars, rear and front fenders...I even have the original seatcover in pretty much mint condition (I was Very careful removing it). I'm looking for a short rear fender and small front if anyone wants to trade for those two items...they can have the lot of what I don't use.
I haven't decided on the grab-bars, but I am ditching the stock headlight ears and turn-signals too.

I had another idea on the paint-job...I might just go two-tone red & Black . Paint the sides red and the topside black separated by the tank's natural lines on the sides...thos w/ k5 tanks will know what I mean.

OK. Sending off the seat to get done Tues. Should have in back after new years w/ any luck. Started painting the tank. I decided on a two-tone red sides/blacktop after all. Almost done w/ the black after some more wet-sanding...then the clear coat goes on. First time rattle can job-(all of $48) so I don't expect much, but I guess we'll see.
It should match up w/ the seat nice anyway. I'll post pics when the clear coats are dried and then its gonna sit in my office w/ the seat until the bike is built up again. NEXT is painting the engine. (after I figure out what's gonna need to be fixed/replaced of course.)

I'm in San Antonio. The Upholster-er is in Minnesota...His name is Nate and the guys is a Michelangelo w/ this stuff...
He does leather and vinyl. I'm doing min in a marine grade vinyl for "around $300" I say around because its not finalized what I'm going to do...e.g. gel pad/no gel pad, I may add on a covering for the oil-tank, etc.
Here's his website:
http://www.natescustomsewing.com/ You should really take the time to got to his gallery page as well on flickr...truly a talented guy.
I'm confident that his work will be 110% more durable and well crafted than the original.

If you end up getting a seat done. Tell him how you found him!

As for my progress...Here's some shots of the tank so far. I say "so far" because I still have some more clear coat and polishing/buffing to do.

BARE METAL

Primer

First color

Middle stage

Second Color

Clear coat

Test fit...I just wanted to see it on the bike..not done yet!

Thanks for the link on the seat guy. I'm pretty happy with the choice I made on this project as far as the seat maker though. We got a good rapport and he really has a good feel of what I'm wanting to do. I may consider your guy for my Bobber build though...as that seems to be the majority of what he has on display (Harley seats?). I must say though...his scope of work is impressive and  high on the exotic side as far as materials. He definitely has a Texas flavor!

BOLTS...WHich one's and Where to get them?
« Reply #24 on: December 25, 2010, 06:26:23 PM »
I've seen some nice bolt kits on line.
First, I'll start with ...I just hate the Phillips head bolts. I just want Hex.
I'll probably do stainless, but I must say that the Aluminum Red anodized Bolts would look really cool on my black covers.
So...Which ones are the most complete, best deal etc.?
That said...Here are my Choices:

http://alloyboltz.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2152&osCsid=de57f93a328edb960016c3749682aee0

http://www.probolt-usa.com/Products/CB750_SOHC_Engine_Bolt_Kit_Side_Casings_Allen_Key

http://www.cyclexchange.net/Coming%20Soon%20Page!.htm
Scroll down to see bolt selection.

I have also seen what look to be decent kits on ebay as well.
