Bonneville BUB Speedtrials pictures 2010
« on: August 30, 2010, 09:54:01 PM »
Heya SOHC folks and other bikers..im out here in Wendover,Utah for the 2010 BUB Speedtrials,it rained earlier this morning and things got off to a slow star but somehow they managed to run 128 bikes today by extending the runs until 7pm..this is my first time to Bonneville,i'm entered in the *Run Whatcha Brung* class on my..Honda CB360..going to give it a o in the morning,we didnt arrive at the track until 12 noon today(Monday) and by the time i got my AMA Membership,Filled out the registration, went theu tech inspection and basically took my sweet time wandering about,i never bothered to get into line for a run so were gettin up early and heading back out on the salt to give it a go.

My buddy Matt brought a Honda Blackbird thats been *well used* and ran 155mph right off the trailer,,,nice run for his first time here.My other buddy had a go of misfortune when his RZ350 decided it was going to tighten up around 120 or so ,he pulled off the track.....hopefully my little machine will hold together long enough to make a few passes(im not expecting to break the sound barrier)ha ha

Anyway,i took some pics and thought i would share, will post more over the next few days, plus, were going to the Bonneville Vintage GP race this coming weekend at Miller Motorsports track, should get some good pics there too..

They say this is the nicest the salt has been in awhle..im diggin it.

What do you do there all day? A lot of waiting around in hot sun? Any place to get out of the sun? Beer drinking going on? What are the temperatures there? What is the format? Bike classes? That's the kind of reporting I'm interested in.

Thanks for posting.

had a slight computer problem plus the batteries in the camera went south but heres some more for you guys.
Yesterday,i took my first pass on the CB360 and went 102.96mph...later on i basically repeated it with a 102.32...on the second pass i had actually put a SMALLER front sprocket on the bike and it was spinning a tad under 10000 rpm..sounded sweet..then i think the cam chain tensioner slider broke cause it did a little lurch right as i was going thru the timed mile..didnt hurt the engine but i decided i was going to park it.If i can, tomorrow,(Thursday, last day) i will toss a leg over the Blackbird and see if i can top my friends 156mph..this bike is gettin the crap run out of it,3 different riderrs,i will be the 4th if it happens.Whatta trip..
Pulled int othe hotel last night and Michael Cyzy(or however its spelled) was washing his electric bike, they went 155 yesterday and 160 something today..this bike is something else and hes a really nice fella..
So im pretty damn happy considering i had several large Harleys in front of me in the staging line that went way slower than i did, plus, several 500cc bikes, some 650s,even some 750's...
Im going to continue this in a new post now..fixin to run out of room.

OK so heres how it worked for me..
Show up..buy a AMA Membership for 40$..pay 250$ for the run whatcha brung, woulda been 150 had i pre entered in July..oh well..you get two timed passes, each additional pass is 50$..included with the entry fee is a gate pass for the whole week..20 bucks a day or 80 for the week i think..theres a fuel truck here but he wasnt open when i went over there so i ran premium pump gas from the local gas station.
Oh and BTW..my Hondaman Ignition worked FLAWLESLELY..not one issue, bike pulled as hard as i wanted to go..
Its not that hot really,to me anyway,im form Georgia and it was WAY hotter there than here..yes theres people suckin down beers but being discreet about it for the most part..
You get your number,go thru tech, and get in the Run whatcha brung line..when its time they release several riders to go to the staging area..when they clear the course(theres 2 courses..the Mountain course(5 miles) and the International(11 miles)..i ran the Mountain course,as i am not attempting a record, you start a tthe 1 mile marker..you get one mile from that point to get up to speed then pin it till you reach the three mile marker then slow down and exit the track as soon as you feel safe..the salt felt good to me but the more powerful bikes have alot of wheel spin and you can hear them out there as their engines rev up and down when the tire breaks loose..this isnt pavement..that stuff can be really tricky..and top speed is in direct correlation to traction..plus your at 4200 ft so speeds are down..theres a ton of bikes out here that could hit 200 mph easy if it was pavement.

Nice looking funtional bike Joe, you did well to return 102 at that altitude, must be a strong motor or it has a state of tune in it. 8)
How would it have faired had you run in competition instead of RWYB, what class would you have been in?

looks like that diesel bike is that KLR650 motor that the marines have for recon... it runs on all kinds of fuel kerosene/jet-A/etc.  I thought they only got sold to military.

The Rolls belongs to Tom Mellor, from the coast here in BC. He runs a streamlined Trident, blew a headgasket yesterday, and hurt some studs. He usually runs 160s and 170 mph range..

Yeah that 360, probably would be right beside a lot of our cb750 stockers on the salt, he better tell us what is done to it.. ;)

ok here we go one last time..im at the salt now, staging is closed so theyre into the last of the runs..
found out last night right before i left that i could transfer my *Run Whatcha Brung* entry over to another bike..so i did just that and climbed on board the 97 Blackbird Honda..first pass,i went 157 and change...so my friend Norm got on it and goes 159.9..so of course,i went back to the entry window and threw down another 50$..suited up and went 159.4..damn it..lol..smooth runnings though, man whatta rush..no cops..no tickets..no wind..sweeeeeeeet.
So were all done here for now..worth every penny and i still havent gotten to Miller Motorsports Track for the Vintage roadraces..geez..wheres that &*#$% credit card...
Took a few more pics this mornin, will post em later..and try and reply directly to ya'lls questions bout the BUB stuff..cmon down we will all pit together next time.
later...

Very nice. That is on my bucket list as well. I should be working on building something for it but with no income right now I just can not seem to find the needed little bits of money to fund such a project. I will get back to work sooner or later though and will defiantly continue to try and make the dream a reality.

If/when you go back will you stick with the run what you brought class or try and build for a more traditional class?

OK sorry for the delays here in answering questions...back in Denver now, headed to Atlanta in a day or two..anyway..lets see..where to start....

As far as a class goes..with the little CB360..since i made the engine 423cc i would have to run in the 500 class as it goes from 350 then to 500..there is no 400/450 category that i could see.I really didnt pay much attention to the existing records as this was more of a pleasure/no pressure trip to have fun and see what this whole Salt flat thing is about..im pretty sure i could find a category to run in but i would have to do alot more to the bike..i built it as a street bike and wasnt even thinking about Bonneville at the time..hell..i just wanted to get the damn thing together to see how it was going to work out..i had Ross pistons make me the pistons to my specs and did all the work myself(besides the machining)..Megacycle cam,cb350 racing valve springs,32mm carbs..homemade pipes..etc etc..didnt run it on a dyno..spent a evening swapping out jets and running it up and down the road checking jetting..till i saw a cop..i figured that was a good time to stop..ha ha.

But yeah,i was pretty damn tickled with the results all and all and im calling it a success..

not enough room to write these long replies..
that Diesel bike was built by HDT?..theyre the suppliers to the military for those diesel bikes..they had a nice set up over there to work on their stuff..
Never really saw Leslie Porterfield, they showed up with a huge rig and a bunch of bikes,i jus hung out over in our little pit area most of the time anyway..she was riding a red Honda something..lol..i wasnt payin that much attention.
Didnt see any CB750 whatsoever..weird..maybe i should build one?Gotta be on the cheap tho, this stuff gets expensive fast..there was a guy with a dual engine cb350 but i havent a clue what time he ran.
Theres SO many creative people,if youre into the weird and wonderful you would love this place..everyones very helpful,friendly..its like a little town unto itself out there.
So we left there and drove over to the Miller Motorsports Park to run in the CB160 class..but the bike was acting up and withdrew the entry..did stick around to watch the Lemans style start..3 guys got taken out by getting hit by other riders when their bikes stalled..i thought it was dangerous..wasnt impressed by that move..but once they got underway it was ok..there were 30+ entries in the class..we parked next to the Hansen Honda guy,he had a super clean CB350 roadracer..check out the front brake..wow..saw some of the sidecar guys run,Sportsman,etc..but we ended up leaving around 4 in the afternoon and headed back here towards Denver..dont get me wrong,i love roadracing,i was just totally fragged after being adrenalized for 4 days at Bonneville and was ready to go..

Well done Joe, I figured it must have been more than just a CB360 to run that speed at altitude.
It's a place I would like to see but as far as riding there...think I'll stick to the concrete untill I have a bike that can't run its top speed without the need for a longer runway.
We are restricted to 1.9 and 1.7 mile runways but they are long enough for 2 way runs over the measured kilo for my little 175 class Honda. I'm hoping to have it out next year if all goes to plan.
Have you ever thought of running at Maxton over the standing mile, a bit nearer home for you and the bike don't get covered in salt ;D

Sam...
Yes i know about Maxton..matter of fact theres a meet there in a few weeks..
This whole Bonneville thing came around because i have some friends out here in Denver that have been a few times and we all just sorta hooked up and went out there.
Besides..its Bonneville..you know?
Just one of those things..to say you went..you did it..personal gratification..and the thought of being able to go as fast as you can for miles holds a certain appeal..to me anyway.
Im not a pro rider..just a guy who started out wanting to build a little Honda that turned into a project that turned into..this.
I reckon it was all in the timing..i have to go back to work soon(im a contractor in Nuclear plants)..so i decided what the hell lets do this.
Who knows when this sort of opportunity will come back around again..its left an indelible memory lodged forever in my memory and you cant put a price tag on that sort of thing. If i never go back i will always remember that i really did this and can prove it..to me thats the important part..

I used to roadrace a long time ago..just ask your pal Bill Benton..we have known each other a long time and worked together too..
I would do this again no problem and am just tickled to death with the end results,it was worth every penny, every hour spent on the bike, every mile driven.
Absolutely..
hey did i mention i am in the BUB 100 and 150 mph club now?
lol

I walked by the Rolls guys pit,the Triumph top end was off and i guess they had a problem with something...to bad because he obviously knows more than a thing or two about Landspeeding..i didnt wan tto take any pics when the man was working on his machine which didnt appear to be cooperating, but they didnt seem to be all bent out of shape either..
I bet he will be back with a vengance next year..im going to try myself with some new ideas to impement this coming year..already scheming as a good little SOHCammer should..
reckon we will see how it turns out then!

Tom Moeller is a retired aircraft engineer.......he built that Trident after playing with the motor for more than 20-years. I got to know him at the 2009 BUB trials.  Very nice and approachable. He takes the Rolls apart for a thorough cleaning every winter.  Tom is also a roadracer and usually competes on a CB160 at the Bonneville GP.

I have asperations but short of $$$ to take my Triumph Cub project to Bonneville. Yes, it would be nice to compete on a CB750 SOHC but hard to find a class to set records.  If any of you ever go.........I suggest a dualsport for a pit bike. Its about 5 miles from the pits to the starting line on the high-speed run.  Watching (and helping) the crews get the bikes to the starting line is very entertaining.

That explains the fairing. I was there last year and I wish I had taken some close-ups of it.
