Ever have an old guy stop and talk bikes to you?
« on: November 01, 2010, 10:53:38 PM »
I'm one of the old guys, was there when these bikes came out new and rocked the world. This story has nothing to do with motorcycles and everything to do with old men and machines and what they mean to us/them. My eyes got kind of funny by the end of the story. Click here  http://thecommunitypaper.com/archive/2010/09_09/index.php  It's a great read.
Cheers,
Cliff.

Great story.  I just finished looking at photos my dad sent home when he was serving in the army air force in the SW Pacific.  A airfield hacked out of the jungle in New Guinea. Primitive living conditions.  And the ever present danger of attack.  No wonder this was the Greatest Generation.  Miss ya Dad.

Great story... my eyes got funny by the end, too.

Wow, what a beautiful story. It's sad to think that since that story was published in 1991, that that veteran is no longer with us. But at the same time, it is also reassuring to know that his life was probably made complete by the kindness of strangers. Sometimes human compassion truly amazes me.  8)

my dad served on escort carriers in WWII and retired from the Navy in 1960.  I have his pictures and I am thinking about putting his squadron patch on the back of my jacket.  He was truly a member of the greatest generation.

great read.

saw something similar on Tank Builders?
they brought this tank vet out for a test run of a rebuilt WWII tank.
and somehow if i remember correctly, while rebuilding it they found a serial number on the body or the turret.
a serial number from a tank that saw action, in the same tank co. the old guy was in/commanded.

he looked like a kid again...

Fantastic to know that there are people out there that treat others with kindness and respect and are mindful of the sacrifices our fathers/grandfathers made, for us to be were we are today.
This story also had my eyes watering up and a lump in my throat. A truely remarkable story and I hope we hear many more.

Maybe this could become a thread for "Inspirational and life changing stories" or similar. What do you thing. We all need to be inspired and have our spirits lifted some times and to reflect on how fortunate most of us are.
