Need ideas for a face shield
« on: September 01, 2010, 09:13:02 AM »
Okay gentlemen, I have an interesting dilemma (really just a curiosity).  I have a Fulmer V2 like the one below, minus the dorky visor.

Recently I started thinking about a face shield to use for highway riding so that I can at least protect some of my face. The thing is this...I want something different than the typical bubble shield. What I'm after is the look of, say, the shield on a fighter pilot's helmet. So, any ideas on how to use/find a 3-snap shield that looks like this?

Also, this is really more about looking super cool than protecting my whole face, so let's just go ahead and leave that out of the discussion.  Ready? Go!!!

And yes, I've thought about taking a dremel to a standard face shield. Just wondering if anyone knows about one that may be already made so I don't eff it up

A little red paint on the helmet and then you can look like this bad boy:

Actually if you wanted to protect more of your face AND look super cool, you could work up a mask piece for the lower half of your face.  Some helmets come with it.  Would work with the fighter pilot look as well.

Just buy a conventional 3-snap or 5-snap flat tinted face shield and trim it to look like whatever you want.

*EDIT*  oops, I missed your second post.  Forget the dremel, just use a pair of scissors or a pair of tin snips.  And, a flat shield is pretty cheap, so you don't really need to worry about effing up.  But, if you're REALLY concerned about the look, use a sheet of cardboard and trim it till it 'looks' the way you want.  Then, use it as a template for the final shield.

I have that exact AGV Helmet & like it a lot-kinda noisy on the highway, but what open faced helmet isn't?  Nice & light.  I also wear a neoprene face mask that does a good job of protecting me on the highway.

bawls i just looked at the price tag.  that's a definite skip.  plus if you ever got in an accident... i dunno, just something about having a slab of aluminum strapped to your face seems like it wouldn't end well

I made mine the other day.

I bought an used face shield for paint ball fight from DAV and chopped the top half so that would fit in my 3/4 met and face. Cut strips of foams and glue them inside of the shield with a glue gun, contouring my face... Used straps of my retired goggle and snap fastener to attached to the helmet.  I have tested on high way and so far it doesn't have weird whistling or anything so I am happy with it. I can always improve it anyway.

I actually have quite a bit of old paintball gear and this thought had crossed my mind. Had sorta forgotten about the idea, but seeing it done has definitely made it a priority. Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the compliments and kind words gents.

The goggle is slightly tinted but I never had any problem using it at night. You can wear your prescription glasses under it if your glasses are not huge one like from 70's. I think I got the goggle from somewhere and paid about 20 bucks.

I don't know which maker made the paint ball face shield I used. I am sure that you can pick cheap one up from Wal-Mart or try google shopping. Most of them cost no more than 25 bucks. Some Wal-Mart ones are about 10 bucks.  I did not want to screw it up wasting 20 bucks, so I got mine at DAV.

You can get some leather straps from hobby stores like Hobby Lobby or equivalent. And snap fastener is like 5 bucks from a hardware store.

I used foam from insulation for water pipes since it was laying around and free for me.  A glue gun is pretty cheap if you get it from Wal-Mart. Don't forget glue sticks while you are there...

Good Exacto knife and blades are must to have.  You might want to wear them many times to check if you are achieving the looks and comfort. I did that. I had a mirror in front of me when I was making it.

I think would be cool to glue some leather on part of it or copper or some metal plates here and there to make it look like somewhat steam punkish? Or paint a smile....Huge lips..

Good luck every one and love to see yours when it is made.

   Thanks,
