Replacing the cam chain CB750
« on: February 27, 2006, 06:38:42 AM »
Has anyone ever replaced the cam chain without splitting the cases?  If it is possible, how do you thread it down and back up through the tensioner? I'm thinking that the new chain can be connected to the old chain to do this.  Is there a better way?  What about riviting the master link...is there a tool that someone has to take a photo of?
TIA, Steve F.

Yep, that's the way. It's good to have a telescoping magnet on hand(looks like a car antennae) should things come apart in the process. Turn the motor with a wrench rather than by pulling on the chain (socked myself in the face, haha, when things came apart).

You'll need a cam chain breaker/rivet installer and a grinder or dremmel to get the old cam chain off and new one on.

WHat are your thoughts on the cam chains with master links? I think tsubaki makes one of these.

I've got the Tsubaki heavy duty chain with master link(press rivet, not clip) installed, no problems so far and I ride pretty hard. I'd shy away from any clip type master link. Since you need the same tool to take off the old chain that you would need to press on a rivet link, why risk it.

A mate of mine used this split link type of cam chain on his CBR 600 with no problems, it's been in there a couple of years now, and it's his daily ride.

It was done by splitting the chain and connecting the two together, and rotating the crank.

The biggest pain if this is the cb750, you still have to remove the engine
