what is the earliest year goldwing with a reverse gear?

1988 GL1500 six cylinder......"slow-speed reverse gear system".

2003 GL1800 lists "electric reverse"........

Valkyrie/Rune specs make no mention of a reverse...

I'd say TBP's got the years right. I think the 1500's had an electric reverse too, there was a big clunky handle on the left side of the bike to engage a reverse gear to the starter motor.

I don't know about the earlier models, but the GL1800 version, that has been around since introduction in 2001, has a reverse that is powered by the starter motor.  The bike must be stationary, motor running, and in neutral; then a button on the right handlebar will activate the reverse function.  (Also, the sidekick must be up...lots of relays involved.)  After that button is engaged, pressing the starter button activates the starter motor which will slowly power the bike in reverse.  This is a very handy feature on a 900 lb motorcycle...I know and use it regularly!

As a side-benefit, if the motor is turned-off while this reverse function is engaged then the transmission/rear wheel is "locked" and the bike effectively has a "park brake" applied.  You can't move it or start the motor until the ignition key is turned on and the reverse switch button is disengaged.  Just better hope that the battery still works and all the relays kick-out again!   Otherwise...call a tow with a crane and hook...I did say it weighs 900 lb.

I have an 1998 GL1500.
Reverse on this model as with all the earlier one's, from 1988, has the reverse lever to the left side of the "dummy" tank which is required to be pulled vertical from its usual horizontal position, with the gear box in neutral, then hit the starter button. The bike crawls slowly backwards until you release the starter. (or flatten the battery, I have been told it will do away 250 yards before this happens, but have never been game to try. (Why would you).
Once reverse is completed the lever is returned to the horizontal and all is ready to continue as normal.
