Polishing brakes, right?
« on: September 03, 2010, 04:25:14 PM »
I am running out of things to polish and am finally going to address my FRONT brake calipers and the arm that holds them...they are all aluminum right? They should polish up real nice?

It is a pain in the ass though, some spots are pretty rough (casting) but looks good when done! still easier than the damn controls...

Quick tip, get out your bench buffing wheel or dremel with a tapered felt bob and hit it with some black emery compound. You'll be able to smooth out the casting in no time, same for the controls etc.

the arm polishes real nice and fairly quick  I painted the caliper, too may hard places to get to for me.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Sand them down to 400 grit as best you can and get a die grinder with some small buffing wheels.  They turn out ok.

I don't polish myself, I sub it out. Plus, restoring my 550F was my winter project.

I thought the cam cover was awkward, these are going to take forever....

Also... How sealed are the pistons? What's the best way to clean the gunk out of there? What is that stuff anyways?
