Hi,new to the site,really enjoy all the knowledge from the group.
i have a 78 & 71 750,i'm cafeing the rough 71,my question is what type
of foam i should use to form the seat before i cover it .
I'll be using stock pan & want the rear hump cafe style.

carpet pad worked out great! carpet stores gave away small 4'x4' for free to me, plus you can layer it for +/- padding! cheap bastards unite!

I bought some microcell foam. Like foam on a kyak seat. Water proof so if you dont cover in its ok, ala superbike seat. Feels like memory foam, not too bad, I have 1" on mine & you can get it thicker or thinner.

I have been looking around for the same thing and found that HYDRO-TURF sell 1inch thick foam padding for jetskis. I think it was 39 " x " 19 x 1" for 20 bucks.

I use sectional floor mats. Four 2'x2' sheets at Harbor Freight for around $8.00. It can be layered using contact cement If you prefer more padding and is easily shaped with a razor blade, wood rasp and rough sandpaper.

Well I was kind of thinking about buying and cutting up one of those ubiquitous blue foam sleeping pads. I think they're about $6 at walmart, 3/4" thick, waterproof and pretty tough. They come pretty big, so you should be able to cut and layer them to make it thicker if you want, hell you could probably make 2 or 3 seat pads with just one of them. Just thought I'd mention it. I want to make a nice aluminum (polished or painted black? ....hmmmm) cafe seat for my new $25 "Ikea" CB550K once it's running and i was planning on using the blue foam pad.

Borrowed some from the heating / ac contractor on one of the construction sites I walk around on. Thick foamy stuff that has a smooth surface used to insulate heating and ac piping in big buildings. They wrap the pipes with this stuff. Works pretty well other than that you'll have a print of your favorite jeans in negative in your seat for a couple of days. For some reason doesnt really restore very quickly, but hey. Stuff was free..

They will cut the sheets to size and throw away the leftovers. These are big enough to cover ten cafe seats with and they dont mind some diy gearhead to haul off their garbage.

someone suggested that i use high density foam from a fabric store. i got some 3" scrap for a dollar, brought it home and put it on my regular seat and sat on my bike. it compressed all the way and was pretty useless.

I'm going to try the exercize mat idea. good thinking.

here is the link to the stuff I used. I used the 25 mm pad but they say it is out of stock. I cuts pretty easy but gets a lil rough when you sand it so you probaly want to make a cover for it.
