cheap top end rebuild
« on: February 27, 2006, 06:22:53 PM »
Hello all.  My cam chain sounds like poo, so I am considering a "refreshed" top end.  This is a '77 F2 with 40K on her .  I had it apart a few years back to replace weeping oil seals and i reassembled it without replacing anything except gaskets/seals.  I know I need a new chain and associated tensioner devices, but what else do I NEED to do wihilst I'm in there - I DO NOT need an 836 kit, titanium valve retainers, hot cam, ported heads, strenghened towers, etc etc etc.  (maybe someday)   Do I NEED new rings/honing, a rebore?  Do I need to mess with the head at all?  I don't have a lot of dough, just want a lovely running stock engine.  Thanks in advance for your advice!   G

Rings/hone and gaskets is ok.  Before honing check the cyl and make sure they are not too worn.
Generally look everything over for anything suspicious.

I'm sure the valve guides are shot....especially the exhaust side.

yeah, exahaust valve guide slop is likely. may want to check the valve seals as well.
