Worn drive sprocket (ever seen one this bad?)
« on: September 04, 2010, 05:37:01 AM »
Can you believe some P.O. ran this sprocket until the teeth were nearly gone??!!  Unbelievable!

I don't have a picture, but I bought a supposedly "bulletproof" plastic composite rear sprocket years ago. On a long trip it started skipping on acceleration. Then skipping going uphill. Then skipping just about all the time. When I limped into about the tenth bike shop - where they actually had a sprocket that fit (used but a lot better) - it looked like yours.
I'm not (quite) as much of a sucker for idiotic ideas now.

Yes, I have!  In the 70's I worked in a bike shop and after doing a tune up I checked the chain tension.  It was like a guitar string.  I adjusted it and  tried to ride it.  Thought the clutch gone with a funny noise.  Other mechanics looked and laughed.  Removed the cover and the sprocket had very small bumps left.  Owner was miffed that I adjusted the chain and ruined his bike.  Did NOT want new sprockets or chain, he said it worked fine when he brought it in.  The owner backed me up and said it was not anything the shop did.

Well when you're on the road things are sometimes taken beyond the limit.  Here is our sprocket we'd been trying to replace for a couple thousand miles while on the road.  It's hard to arrange these things along the way!

I've seen them pretty close to that bad.
Ever seen one like this?
It was a long time ago, buyt it came off my 1982 XC250 Husky.
It was needing to be changed and I was waiting for my new one to arrive,(before the internet and quick shipping).

When I finally got the new one, this is what I found when I changed it.

I've seen a lot of things, but this is the only sprocket I have ever seen that just broke every other tooth off.
The sprocket still hangs on my shop wall.

I think they used that in the movie "KRULL".

I'm saving it for the next sequel for "Road Warriors"!
I can just see a close up of this stuck in some mutants head :P
