Machine tolerance on the head and block
« on: February 28, 2006, 03:17:52 PM »
Do you shave the head down and "deck" the block the same way that you would a car or truck? I had to do this on my Toyota when I rebuilt it, but I don't know if you have the same problem with the head and block not matching up when put back together. When it's ported and polished, is this usually included? If so, what are the tolerances on the head and cylinder block?

A light surfacing of the head or decking of the cylinder block will not affect the fit of the parts. It will bring the valves closer to the pistons and retard cam timing but how much depends on the amount removed. As to whether or not it's included in a porting depends. If it is included it will be stated. It is a nice touch and insures a perfectly flat surface.

Thats what I figured. I know that when I did my Toyota it was necessary if you didn't want a blown head gasket.
