CB550 Bobber Check Out My First Build
« on: December 06, 2010, 06:15:45 PM »
So first of all, I would like to say thanks to everybody who participates and shares their knowledge and experiences, whether good or bad, on this forum... I have spent countless hours browsing and searching (yes I know how to use the search function  ;D ) this forum and it has pretty much given me all the know how to get my bike this far. So I started my project in August 2010 after acquiring a bike from my buddy, I primed his car, he gave me a bike. You know the one that supposedly runs, "I just haven't driven it in two years, but its a dependable bike man"   ::). So anyway check out the picks and voice your opinions  ;D . My objective was to build a bobber while not putting to big a dent in my wallet. The only special tools I used, was a Flux core wire welder from Northern, 4 1/2 inch angle grinder for HF, and a Drill, no Jigs or fancy sh!t just a cinder block an angle finder and some cheap a$$ welding clamps. I've ridden only about 25 miles on it since I didn't have a tag and I only had a rigged up taillight. Everybody that looks at it swears that I used a jig because they can't see any kind of tire lean or whatever the hell their trying to find. Anyway looks at the pics and voice you opinions please !!!! And again I would have to say THANKS to all you guys, I learned a lot more here than I did from the annoying neighbors that stop buy and voice their opinions about how to weld something or what a bobber is supposed to look like when they don't know diddly squat.
The bike was in okay condition when I got it, not the worst I've seen, it started right up after cleaning an rebuilding the carbs.

Frame cut and getting the TC Bros kit tacked in.

All the rails and axle plates spotted in.

My first seat idea utilizing one of the original rear shocks, was very comfy but, I'm very tall and needed my seated further back so when the spring compressed the bottom of my seat would hit the fender. I actually got a few rides with how it looks now, man it was fun. Got the idea of bolts for footpegs on the forward controls from someone, somewhere on this forum, can't remember where or who but big thanks to whoever it was.

Don't laugh at my light, I've already covered that myself  ;D but I really wanted to ride bad, so I borrowed the light from my 400 ex and welded a tacked on a couple of tabs, and off I went, no tag, no signal lights, no mirrors, headlight not even wired, man that was a great feeling  ;)...

And well here she be as of today. I still have to get exhaust wrap, angled exhaust tips to keep the heat off my arse. fork seals, a new front tire, and wire it in, then comes the long wait for the next Tennessee spring it was 20 degrees today when I took the pics  :-[ ...

Wow what a long post, sorry... Just wanted to give back a little of what I've taken. I also have some questions, could someone recommend, a good AGM battery for me, I'm having a hard time understanding which on to buy as the numbers are different than the standard batteries, and the conversion charts I've seen don't list an AGM for a 74 cb550.  On another note, one of my exhaust studs is broken and I stripped the screw where the speedo cable goes into the speedo drive, can the stud be removed, I think i can handle the speedo screw but I don't know about the exhaust stud. Oh and one other thing, well probably not the last thing, I'd like to clean up my rims a bit, is there a good product or method. I was going to replace the rear wheel with a 16 inch conversion and a 130 tire, but the more I look at it the more I like the 18 inch rim with the 110 tire, the 18 inch rear rim seems to compliment the 19 inch front wheel pretty good, that and I'm not big on the wider tires but my neighbor almost talked me into it.

Update: Got a new 16" Harley Rim Laced to the back hub. Shinko HD Dual Whitewall Tire and Avon Speedmaster on the front, in the process of removing the pipes, they were to low. Going to run straight pipes with some old VW Bug tips, as I hear they are the same diameter and used to be a popular mod back in the day. Also made a tag/taillight bracket out of some scrap metal I had laying around, I'm really loving the look of the 16" rear rim it really makes the 19" front look bigger and it fits the bike perfectly. Enjoy the pics, More to come. I can wait till spring its cold as sh%t here.

I think it looks great man!!!. I am thinking of dabbling in the "Bobbing" process myself, but I need to research the frame cutting a lot more ( among other things ) but great job!

Thanks man. The cutting part is easy, getting everything in line was a bit more complicated. Nevertheless it was fun.

Dude I have no idea I'm stumped. As of right now I've cut them off. I'm thinking of making some kind baffle to get back pressure, I was going to use some old vw bug tips but I don't know yet. Hell you got any ideas, I need some lol, and I would like to keep it cheap as I only have a little over 500 invested including the purchase of the bike, I'd like to keep it simple and cheap.

Are the mini gauges included for free  ;D? I actually looked all over the internet trying to find those twisted metal bars after seeing them on a guys bike on youtube. Then my neighbor gave me a bar I think its a superbike bar and I love it, that and the fact that I don't have to buy extended cables and stuff for them.

So I finished cutting off the pipes, the other day, I made some gaskets for my carbs using Felpro gasket material, I removed my speedo and tach I like the look a lot better, thinking about getting a mini one of the one that cycle x offers that mounts right by the wheel (don't know if it will fit a 550 though as its for a 750). I'm gonna wrap the pipes in tan wrap and I plan on making some kinda baffle to apply back pressure, I've been looking around and seeing something about using either a washer or a thumb screw at the end of the pipe. Suggestions would be more than welcome on what I could do with the pipes that would be cheap and simple. I'll post some pics, not to much of a difference but the pipes are cut, I got everything wired up, only thing I need to do is put some oil in it, and hopefully I can get a test ride this Saturday, it supposed to get up into the 50's  ;D. I'll take some outside pics when the snow and rain goes away and I get off of work early enough. Excuse all the crap in the background  ;D

Finally got me a ride.  ;D It was nice and my seat is cushioned fairly well, seeing as I hit a few pot holes and my ass or back wasn't hurting the next morning. If anybody has ideas for an exhaust that I can make, I'd be more than pleased to here them, I'd like to see some pics if you have any.
