Going to try to start the ATC again tomorrow.

I used electrolysis to clean the paint and rust off the stock metal tank.

Its official. This thing is an enigma.
Bought it as a basket case. Cleaned up the bits. Put the bike back together. It started and ran with the first few pulls. The old carb was suspect with stripped leaking everything so, I got a carb off a running atc70, cleaned it and the bike ran great for 30 seconds. That was a week ago. I have removed the carb, cleaned, cleaned and checked points, timing is dead nuts...put it all back together and....ZIP. Has a strong spark, gas is getting to the plug, but the bike shows zero signs of life. My back is killing me from pushing and trying to pull start. burnt and burnt out.

Well you only need 3 things for a gasoline engine to run.  Spark compression and fuel

sounds like you have checked 2 of the 3, do a compression test

Does it have real good compression?????? When you say good spark how are you determining that??? Visually jumping a arc???? I can bring my compression tester home tomorrow if you want??? Im not at the garage today,

Has compression (sucks hand into carb), has a visual spark when touched to exhaust, I just gave it a sniff of starting fluid and...still nothing. My back is killing. I might have convinced a co worker to donate his 2 stroke pit bike as a source of a....running motor.

What does the plug look like when you take it out after trying to start awhile, plus you should do an acutal compression test with the plug out, the carb should be at WOT,  see what you get on the first pull than do 3 or four more pulls and watch to see what i is doing

You know I never asked is this a 2 or 4 stroke

OK. compression wins. When you pull start the bike it sucks in the carb, but there is zero psi out the tailpipe. Time for a new motor?

Hey Gents, we met in some haunted pub a few months back with MReick and SamCB750A.......what's up?

So pull-pull-pull, and nothing, repeat with starting fluid and nothing, different carb and nothing.
Plenty of fuel, clean plug, clean carbs, petcock is on (and clean) all grounds are in place? points are set?
It's not 180 degrees off or something is it?

If you pull the sparkplug and block the hole with your finger, do you get compression when you pull the starter?
That's not a CDI ignition is it? Will checking the spark by grounding against the exhaust damage it?

It's gotta be something simple like broken rings or something. Leakdown test?
Good luck.

Yeah we'll have to get together soon, you guys should head over to www.nehondaguys.info if you were members there before you've probably been deleted in a recent move to get rid of some spammers...and nonposting members. If you rejoin do an intro post and all that stuff.

Anyway we'll probably be getting together in December for a few beverages somewhere, someone usually starts the thread and the debate rages until everyone drops out, or someone takes the lead and sets it in stone.

Lets do this.
Alan

Did you check the cam timing? Its pretty easy on those..you pop that round cover off on the head and line up the *T* mark on the rotor..there should be some marks on the cam sprocket..i think its a little circle looking mark..it should be facing up..like at 12 o clock..with the *t* mark lined up..

sometimes they jump time if the cam chain has been loose a long time..
just a suggestion..

also..tight valve will make it REAL hard to start.if at all.
might want to check  valve clearances..try .003" on both sides for starters..

Got the new engine in. Runs like a little frigging champ. It is a kickstart motor so I need to machine the flywheel so the stock pullstart will fit....and work.

There is no room to kick it. Right now it is a push start. I put the pics of that double shock mono shock in my "Project Frankenbike CB550 bastard" cafe bla bla bla thread. You will laugh.

Rode it around the parking lot for 10 mins today and.....broke the frigging rear fender being stupid. Essentially 10 mins = $80. :'(
