Center stand question 72 CB500
« on: September 04, 2010, 08:52:43 PM »
Hey all. I have a quick centerstand question.

Every bike I've ever had that actually HAD a center stand would elevate the rear wheel while on the stand. The CB500 - does not. BOTH wheels touch the floor and will not rotate.

What gives? Is my stand modified/broken? The PO told me not to use it too much as it would eventually work loose and slide back to touch either the rear wheel or the chain. (don't remember which) I take that to mean it's not RIGHT.

Any suggestions? I'm tempted to just take it off this winter while I rework the bike but it might be nice to have.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Some wild ass guessing.

Is the funky centerstand mounting causing it to buckle somehow?

Is the centerstand modified (shortened)?

Does it have lowering blocks that came loose?

Does the rear swingarm have a lot of droop while on the centerstand?

Are the rear shocks longer than stock?  My CB750K are 13" from mounting bolt to mounting bolt on while on the centerstand.  Check your length.  I'm not sure if CB500 is same length or shorter than CB750K.

I'm voting for either bent center stand mount or longer rear shocks.

What size tire ya got on there?  The rear tire on my CB500 (with Progressive shocks, little longer than stock apparently) would get off the ground with the stock 3.50-18 tire.  I mounted a 4.00-18 K70 and the tire no longer gets off the ground.  My remedy while on the road is to find the edge of some pavement or a dip in the ground.

Had an accident damaged CX500 where the frame was bent shortening the wheelbase (Wheels still in line tho') that had the same problem

Thanks for the replies everybody! I appreciate it.

Tires are: 110 90 19, 120 90 18
Sitting on the side stand unloaded rear shocks are 12.5", front are 27 1/2 from bottom of fork to the bottom of the TOP tripple clamp.

Center stand doesn't look bent or modified... maybe it's off of a different bike? I'll try to get a pic tonight.

My '71 CB500 is the same way. Stock size tires, stock center stand, no frame damage, stock shocks. I think that's just the way they are.

Yes! 'cept for that dent in the tank. Have you thougt about paintless dent repair?

Back to the centerstand, when at home, simply use a 1x4" board under the stand.

I kind of like the dents Meriggi! :D
Since this bike is kind of ratted out already I'm thinking about keeping with the theme. I haven't really decided yet which way I want to go, but this winter I plan on fixing it up and maybe making some changes. I have this urge to get the tail up a few degrees and get a taller, longer tank for a pseudo cafe look. Not sure yet.

So... if the centerstand doesn't actually raise the rear wheel - what's the point? Looks like a poor design decision to me.

Does the stand look correct?

I don't see anything odd in referance to the centerstand?

My centerstand had been tossed in favor of a kerker 4-1. Is yours somehow hindering the center stands operation? I can't tell from the pics, but I thought the c stand had to be modified to work with most 4-1 on the 500?

it looks to me that maybe the center stand might be angling a little to far forward like the stop or pinch point might be worn. Get someone to help you pull the bike forward slightly while on the stand and slip a shim in the pinch point and see how it acts, I'd start with an 1/8" or so and work up. Make sure you don't go to far and take all the angle out or the bike won't stay on the stand.

To add on to what Raef said, it may be a combo of that and your tire size.  I think the stock size is 100/18, so you've gone up two sizes.  Looks beefier than my rear Dunflop for sure.

Thanks folks! I'll check the angle of the stand out. Looks normal to me on inspection though. The 4-1 was on the bike when I bought it, and doesn't appear to hinder the stand at all. It was installed by welding tabs onto the exhaust to mount to the stock points...?

Somethings been changed, the rear wheel should be off the ground enough to service the tire, chain etc.  My guess starts at 1. longer shocks, 2. bent stand or points of contact (though not evident in picture), tire (though it doesn't seem overly large and most models usually accepts larger tires on the stands).  OCICBW

It does sound like from others that the 500 stand didn't raise it much.

The PO told me not to use it too much as it would eventually work loose and slide back to touch either the rear wheel or the chain. (don't remember which)

I find this bit to be a little troubling.

While you're poking around looking at things remove the spring and see if the stand moves about on the pivot other than just pivoting on it.  Failing that remove the stand and have a look at all the shaft that runs through it, the mounting tabs on the frame, and the stand itself.   If it has enough slop in it to  move fore and aft something ain't right.

FWIW My CB500 frame is sitting on the center stand, empty and bare in the garage while I work on my engine. I measured, and the rear tire is about 1.5 inches off the surface of my level garage.  The tire is deflated, though I don't think it'll change that distance any.

Just thought a measurement would help (though I haven't rebuilt my frame yet) :P

My 750K8 does the same thing front forks are 4" over stock I took it off and use a jack in the shop. I'm pretty sure Honda made the rear wheel to come off the ground.

It's the new tire. Mine did the exact thing 20 years ago when I put on a 'modern' tire. Even with a stock tire it was always close to the ground on my '72'. (and it is good for quick getways - as someone else pointed out)

Is this specific to the early models do you think? If Lavis' tire is 1.5 inches off the floor then mine is way different.

I can see the tire affecting the height but not that much.

Not sure what the guy meant about the center stand sliding. I've looked it over and I think he meant the STOP would slide. I'll probably fix that this winter. He was a good dude but I think he bought this thing already modified and couldn't know what was up.

Should have also mentioned that my tire is a 3.50 x 18 k112 Continental.  Not the original tires from the bike (though still old enough that I NEED to replace them)  however, 3.5 x 18 is the factory tire size.

I looked through my manuals and I can't find what the length of the shocks is supposed to be.  I'm sure if you look hard enough you could find it. Measure it to make sure it isn't too long or anything.

You should check the centerstand and find out what the problem was for the previous owner.

There is a trick of inserting washers (or coins) between the coils.  This done while on the centerstand, spring extended.  When the stand is retracted (spring collapsing), the spring is unloaded and longer.  (I may have found the trick on this forum).

That way you can check out the stand without preload and see what isn't right.
