Before and after photo of painstaking paint removal.  I'm not shooting for a polished engine nor do I want to remove the engine from the frame right now.  About an hours worth of work I figure.  Done with aircraft stripper, razor blade, fingernails, and wire brush (so far).

00 or 000 steel wool works pretty well for cleaning up chrome. It can really make it look new. Also, there is another thing I've found that helps with tedious, mind-numbing jobs like this. Beer

I just cleaned my ATC70 engine by putting it into the sandblast booth and glass bead blasting it. (lightly) Came out great, looks like aluminum again and more importanly it looks even with no more wear spots. I ended up rattle can aluminum-ing it. Why? Just because I liked it better with the paint.

For inbetween the fins I've been using those dark redish 3m scuff pads used to prep surfaces for painting.  Works good to get the corrosion out and you can find them at most autoparts stores like O'reilly.

Thanks for the advice.  One thing to add to my growing "dumb ideas" list:  Don't scrape off aircraft stripper with fingernails...

yeah, that stuff is basically a methalene chloride gel...your body will absorb the meth and it stores in your fat cells. bad stuff. I use 5f5 for paint stripping...they even have an eco-green enviro orange crapolla. works.
