Make it Different
« on: February 28, 2006, 08:38:22 AM »
I have a 75 CB550 with Drag pipes, metalflake orange. I came to school thinking I'd be the only one with a vintage bike, and a loud ass one @ that. I get to school and someone said they saw me cruising around. I was like 'ok, cool'. I come to find out that someone has the SAME bike in the SAME color! What are the odds of that? Well, he doesnt have the badass pipes, but he's a cool guy. What I was wondering was what could I do to make my bike different? Maybe a few boltons... turn signals, tail light etc? Any suggestions and sources?

Oh, and my 1+2 cylinders arent firing... should I replace the wires as designated in the FAQ (time consuming) or just replace the coil?

coils are rarely bad, check all the connections back to the points, check the plug ends(boots) , and make sure you have good grounding to the frame. it is easy to swap the blue and yellow leads from the points, and switch the wires @ the plugs(thus making the 1-4 coil the 2-3 coil) this will  comfirm the coil is good as well as the points.  (if you don't have an multimeter)
I had the same issue, turned out to be two carb problems simultaneously on the carbs that were on the same coil, (talk about effing troubleshooting ...nightmare)
Find the problem first, throwing parts @ it is a waste of money, and you can introduce new variables and problems to the mix...
sift through the FAQS again there is a ton of stuff....

OH yeah, CHOP IT>>> lower, and get rid of the  dead weight. i slapped some gangster WWalls on mine....

If the other guy's bike is firing on all four, then your's is different already.

Ok, but seriously.  I would not go changing things too much.  You said you liked the thought of being unique with a vintage bike, stick with that.  Plus if yours is louder, let that be what sets you apart.  You have to remember, people who are not into motorcycles probably won't notice the difference with turn signals or such, but I promise they will know the difference between a quiet bike (well, in relative terms) and a loud one.

Be loud, be proud! ;D

I agree, Slam it! That will make it stand out!  ;D  Low and loud... (granted I don't like loud pipes, but that's a personal preference)

If 1&2 are out but 3&4 are on, then you've got a blockage somewhere in the line between the petcock (assuming stock w/dual outlets) and the shared feed line between carbs 1 and 2. Shut off the gas, disconnect that line, remove the bowls from 1 and 2, and hit the feed line with some compressed air. Whatever's in there should come out from one float jet or the other. Button it back up and see if that's done it; if not, might be time for a carb cleaning session.

Two cylinders... funny huh? There are two reasons I deduced this: 1. There is exhaust coming out of the pipe connected to 3/4 2. The plugs on 1/2 were wet, 3/4 were not. Also, this happened after riding the bike 60 miles in a driving rainstorm (had to go it, radar love). This is why i think the coil is bad... How exactly do I slam it? Also, where can I get some of those tires!?

sorry guys it was funny.  and yes but seriously check the gallery of bikes.  go to faq and go to online resources to the section about finishesbikes (and drool), benjie and carpy have some awesome bikes.  also ohiocaferacer.com has some nice bikes and a cool gallery.  find out what style you like or maybe combine styles.  Maybe you might put a new twist of you own on your old bike.

This is why i think the coil is bad...

Cylinders 1 and 4 share a coil, and 2 and 3 share the other.  Do you have 1 and 2 hooked up to the same coil?
