Thought I might put this in for those who may be interested. It is a site of riders from around the US and they have been in the news lately. You can do a google search and find some stories on them.

Eldar - I had not heard of the PGR before or the phenomena of protesters at soldiers funerals. Freedom of speech is one of the beauties of our way of life, but I am shocked, disgusted and appalled that anyone could be so callous and cruel at such a vulnerable time . My hat is off to the Patriot Guard Riders and similar associations for their principalled, dignified and restrained activities. If I were an American , I would be there. My world just got a little bigger today. David

I'm a new member of the PGR. Seemed the right thing to do since I am from Kansas and so is the infamous Rev. Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church. The PGR was started due to this jackass and his fanatical thinking. They started the whole picketing of U.S. soldiers funerals, and I was fit to be tied to say the least.

Patriot Guard Riders Mission Statement

The Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. If you share this respect, please join us.

We don’t care what you ride, what your political views are, or whether you’re a "hawk" or a "dove". It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you’re from or what your income is. You don’t even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect.

Our main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives.

1. Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.

2. Shield the mourning family and friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors.

We accomplish the latter through strictly legal and non-violent means.

Is it their right to picket or demonstrate? according to the First Amendment, yes. But, I would hope that anyone living in America would have the common decency to leave these families alone in their grief. They have been through enough already, so thy don't need to hear that their fallen soldier was "killed by god" or some other BS these people spew.

yeah - i read it all and i've been familiar with phelps-hole for a while now...what i mean is - what do you actually do?

do you literally just place yourselves in between the phelps-monkeys and the funeral or do you confront them or try to quieten them? like...how does it work?

Just stand between the funeral service and the Phelps crew, nothing much more to do and stay within the law.

that must take some restraint. i'm not sure i could do it... $:-\$ do they verbally heckle the funerals or just provide a nauseating presence? i've seen the photos of him with a megaphone in his hand...

more power to you, and all those with you. i understand that many of the phelps klan are his family members - truly freedom of expression is a great thing, but sometimes it works out about as well as "democracy"...

Oh yeah, they are quite verbal about their beliefs, and yes, it takes restraint. Anything else would be provoking, and therefore, sinking to their level.

I guess I had mistakenly thought these people were simply protesting the war, albeit in a very disgusting way, something I'm familiar with from my Vietnam days. Just saw a news segment on their protests and the manner in which they carry them out. It seems they are really protesting the fact that our country is tolerant of gay relationships and therefore, in their eyes, military personnel are somehow supporting this. The one individual interviewed briefly called himself a "Reverend." We do seem to have some pockets of distasteful human beings.

Wow, what a shame something like PGR has to exist but it's a good thing it does exist. I peaked at the whacko's website- it seems they are obsessed with the evils of homosexuals and how they have caused the ruin of USA (according to their read on the bible). I dunno, I visited USA at Christmas and things didn't seem all the different from the year before. Yup, freedom of speech at its best/worst. IMHO (as an outsider) I think what PGR is doing very important and honourable- keep up the good work. I also read that Arkansas passed a law making it illegal to protest at funerals. Sounds like something the other states should be considering.

Kentucky is passing a law forbidding protesters within 300 feet of funerals and they are not to be within earshot of the mourners. The protesters held a protest at the Ky. Capitol in Frankfort, only to be met with ten times the people protesting their presence. I was rather proud of my fellow Kentuckians at that point since for once, they showed some good sense.

? HHHmmmm/?? Harleys are loud/phelps is loud
harleys are not always desireable/phelps in not desireable. Harley riders are in almost all cases patriotic/ phelps is not.
Well that does it Phelps is the winner! He is by far worse than any harley rider except maybe the very dregs at the barrel bottom. and even that might be a stretch. People are really getting tired of phelps and his inbred family.

I saw this type of behavior during the Vietnam war. These misguided and many times unbalanced people cannot distinguish between the people who start wars, and those sent to fight. Two years ago I helped dedicate a memorial to some friends that died in Vietnam. It was in a Park dedicated to all American Veterans. When the Iraq war broke out, the Park and Memorials were defaced. While I am not for this War, the Men and Women fighting there did not set policy, and they took an oath to obey orders. I hope that people from Italy, Australia, Poland and our other Allies have more respect for their Veterans. I may join the Patriot Riders out of respect for the Families that are suffering unspeakable pain. I remember hugging many Mothers who lost a Son in Vietnam, I will never forget the look of their eyes. I am sure God hates no one - that is a twisted human trait.
