CB450 Jetting?
« on: September 08, 2010, 12:21:26 PM »
Since I bought my '73 CB450 it's always bogged down when trying to open her up. Also when decelerating in gear she backfires a lot. This is most likely due to running lean, which is most likely due to the unipod air filters the PO installed without re-jetting the carbs.

So, Honda carb gurus, which size jets should I be running in my carbs? And, where's a good site to buy them?

Thanks.

Your '73 is probably a K6 - as such it probably has 145 or 150 mains, 38 slow jets.
450's tend to be pretty forgiving of air cleaner/muffler changes (within extremes).
Usually no rejetting is required if all you do is switch air cleaners - especially if you use the Uni socks.
I have no experience with Pods, but have heard lots of complaints about them.

Before I'd do anything, I'd check the compression (163 psi minimum), warm engine, throttle wide open, no choke.

Then adjust the valves and set the timing - http://home.comcast.net/~tbpmusic6/IgnitionTiming.pdf

Then synch/balance the carbs - http://home.comcast.net/~tbpmusic6/carbsetup.pdf

Now put in new spark plugs and run hard for a while. Pull the plugs and inspect for color.

Assuming the compression is good, and the tuneup is spot on, the plug color will tell you if the jets are a suspect........

My '82 450 had the same issue when I purchased it but was still all stock. I put a small washer under the needle as a shim and it pretty much took care of it. I could use a slightly larger shim but not sure if two of the same would be too much. I might have done a bad thing but I don't know.

The 82 450 is a different bike totally.
Slide needles can't be manipulated on the older DOHC 450 carbs.......
