GL front end compatible parts
« on: January 25, 2011, 09:55:46 AM »
Ok, first off, I know there are TONS of threads on the gl front end swap onto a 750.  But I just have a few short questions I cant seem to find the answers to for sure.
First off.  I am getting (I think) a full front end off a 76 gl1000.  only thing not included is a nice looking fender.  will the fender off of a 73 750 fit?  I'm guessing no, due to the greater width between them.
Second, how about the 750 headlight and blinkers?  will those bolt up? assuming I have the chrome fork ears from the gl?

Third slightly more complex issue.  I know to get the same geometry the forks need to be slid up into the trees a bit.  I dont like how that looks. is it possible to cut and re thread the fork tubes?  so there the same length as the 750?

Different fender mounts, and nowhere to mount the braces.

Headlight mounts should fit if trees are spaced the same distance as on L, may need tpo build spacers.

I cut forks and re thread them quite often, but I advise you to ride and try it before cutting.. Have an extra inch or two, above the top tree is not so bad.. especially if you decide to do some serious adventure riding, you can lengthen it a bit..

Not trying to hyjack you thread bud, hope you don't mind if I tack on a question or three considering we are doing almost the same thing.  I'm swapping a 76 front end to a 78 750K8.  Is this a direct swap?  I have all ballz bearings in my K8 now.  can I just order another kit to put on the GW tripples?  Who is the GW front end and rear wheel swap KING/QUEEN/GOOROO?  I want to send him/her a PM with more questions if I havn't already overstepped my bounds by tacking questions on to this thread.  If anyone knows any links to threads on the subject it would be great if they were posted here.  Even better, if we could post something in the FAQ section that would give guidance on the GW swap.  Info on what fits what etc. Thanks to anyone who can help;D

member name "fishhead". He makes brake kits & is a wealth of info on the swap! I did a 77gl onto my 75/750. Pretty easy, bearings are the same on cb 70-77 to gl 75-77 after then the bottom gl bearing is different but will still work. I think you need both kits then? Not sure about the 78 cb stem/ bearings though? A cb fender is narrower then the gl one. I used dohc,(78/79?) front, flipped backwards & cropped w/spacers. I put progressive fork springs in, & have had the tubes cheated up, but have found I like it w/ them almost level in the clamps. If you want a gl fender I have one, needs some cleaning. But they are big ass fenders.

when i did my swapof 76 gl front onto my 76 f......................I had to remove the tapered bearing from the bottom of the gl tree and use the one that came with my cb750 kit...............other than that....direct swap.

JS500-
How much would you be wanting for that fender?  might be a bit to ship it, (trying to keep this project very low budget.)  I'll probably get one and cut it down a  bit so its more similar to the 750 fender.
Also, can I just buy CB750 spokes for re spoking a gl front wheel?  cant find a set of inexpensive spokes for the gl.

I've got a 75GL frontend waiting for a bike to put it on. Made a note to myself

Product Code: 22-1011 Same for CB750K and GL1000 just like Fishhead says
https://www.allballsracing.com/22-1011.html

Steering Bearing - Seal Kit Honda  CB750A 76-78, CB750F Super Sport 75-78, CB750K1-K5 750 Four 69-78, CJ360T 76-77,  GL1000 Gold Wing 75-76, GL1000L 76

So same bits for K1 - K5. After that... The 69-78 seems to imply it's the right one but then they specifically list K1 - K5. Maybe give All Balls a call?

Search for some of my old post as I have put a bunch of GL swap info on this website in the past.

Ideally, if  you are using the spoked wheel, you would need to use the 75-77 GL front end. If you are using the Comstar wheel, use the 78-79 GL front end. This is the easiest way to do the swap. The calipers, bottom fork legs and and discs are different between the 2 different GL front ends and wont interchange (same goes with the speedo drive). Get these parts(and axle, etc) for the same GL front end that you have. You will also need to make fork stops to keep the GL forks from hitting the gas tank.

My GL forks are flush with the top tree and are fine(stock springs). Start there and "play" with it to find a setting that suits you best. My front fender is a plastic aftermarket because I don't like the big skirted GL fender.

The steering bearing kit for your CB750 SOHC will fit the GL stem. Use the GL fork ears (or aftermarket) with your CB headlight bucket and use the K model idiot light cluster/handlebar clamp on the GL top tree. I'm not sure about the turn signals as the GL uses different turns (big ones) and the mounting points are different.

One overlooked problem is that you may have to find a way to mount your gas tank 1/2" to 1" back in order to accommodate the wider spread of the GL1000 forks from striking the front of the tank on both sides as they are turned right to left.  Body putty in the forward tank mounts did it for me.

The front fender from an 80 CB900C will bolt right on and I think looks good. Kinda hard to see here though

Hey guys lets keep this thread going. Please add ideas, successes and failures here. I want to do a build thread simply labeled GOLDWING SWAP.  I will compile all the info I get here, then do the swap with lots of picks. This way people can do the job without having to reinvent the wheel every time.  The more info I get here, the better I can document my build and the more helpful it will be to someone else down the road. My plan is to swap the front end and re lace the back wheel to a 750 hub.
