All you inverted fork guys...... help
« on: January 26, 2011, 05:52:03 PM »
75 CB750K

Seems like the majority of the conversions are done with GSXR front ends.    Why not Honda CBRs ?

I know I won't be lucky enough to find something that bolts up directly.   But...I would like as little modification as necessary.    I plan on using a spoked wheel w/ a 4LS monster of a drum off a 72 Suzuki GT750.   So no issues with rotors etc.

I do have a lathe that I can make spacers from and a cheap hydraulic press - hopefully that's all I need.

Any specific front end that is easier to play with than others ?

Is Industrial Cafe's thread pretty much the definitve thread on the subject ?   -    http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=63784.0

This bike will be built soley for looks and mild riding - no racing.

I went with the forks off a ZX12R. They just seem to always be reasonably priced. For my frame I just ordered a set of tapered bearings that matched I.D. O.D. to the stem and welded the "cradle" track for the bearing right onto the bottom of the stem. McMaster Carr had the precise bearing and track size I needed.

In the second picture you can see my gross weld and stop. clean up.

I used a kawasaki Z1000 USD front end.  It matched the stock fork tube length of the CB400f I put it on perfectly.  Now if I can just fashion up a bracket to move the fuel tank back so that the forks to hit it on full lock...

From a stem perspective there really isn't much difference between all of the sportbike forks. I had GSXR forks originally and currently have R6 forks and they both had virtually identical stems/triples. I only changed up because I found a killer deal on a complete set of R6 forks including EVERYTHING. My GSXR forks were pretty bare. From memory 30mm top and bottom on the stem, but don't quote me! I have a set of bearings using a mix of tapered bearing parts from both the CB550 and Yamaha XS650 that will should allow me to bolt them in to a 550 neck. Though that bike hasn't been assembled yet, just mocked up.

Don't have a 750, but I seem to recall the stem being longer? Real pain in the ass for you guys  :(

The bottom line is you can use just about anything you want if you have to do something custom with the stem anyway. So look for the best bang for the buck!

That's what I have been slowly figuring out.   Thanks for the advice - off to the salvage yard.

You can check with this guy too: http://www.simpsoncycles.com/

He runs a motorcycle breaking business on eBay.  He's an old friend from South Carolina, and I'm actually building up a CB400F with Z1000 USD forks that he supplied.  I don't know what his prices are like, but he's a good resource for parts.  If you get in touch, with him, then let him know I recommended you.  Not sure if it will help on the price, but he'll definitely give you the time.  Just tell him the guy who's building his CB400F for him sent you.

Regardless of what front end you get, check the bottom diameter of the steering stem location, some Suzuki forks, including some upside down forks, have the same diameter stem, simply remove the old stem and have the Honda stem pressed in...
