Another tach seal question
« on: September 11, 2010, 07:44:28 AM »
Yeah, I know, it's probably been covered a hundred times. But I can't find the answer. :-[

Which way does this seal go in there?

One good rule of thumb: the spring (or the open area where a spring would go, as some don't have springs) always faces the oil. While there may be exceptions, In this case that is true for sure.

Ok.......... got that!

Now, what am I seeing here? Is this the remains of the old seal down in that hole? It appears to be bare metal. I have never opened one of these up before............but this engine has been apart before I owned it and I donno what's been done so I don' know what I'm looking at/for ???

Yup, that apperar to be the old seal. Removal: do a search as some have some unique methods.  Basically, a long (enough) very thin screw, threaded into the seal in its peripheral area, and a second 180 deg out, will allow you to pull the seal out.

I think that some suggest drilling a small pilot hole in the seal to direct the screw. The trick is to not scratch the places where the new seal will come to rest, so that you don't cause another leak.

Sounds formidable maybe, but many here have done it. I think I even did one umpteen years ago.

Yes, that's the old seal.  You can see the raised numbers on it's face that state it's size.

Standard trick for removing it is to put a hole in it with a punch or needle, then run and wood screw into the hole and use that to pull out the seal.

Use a very SHARP punch to start the hole, 1/2 way accros the seal..dont hit the tach shaft. one you make a small prick mark, it will drill easy.
Seal only has to move out abot 3/16, then will fall out..
I made a tool for drilling, then we took pics of using it, then installed new seal backwards... :-[   :-[   :-[.. it leaks.. lucky I buy 2 at a time..

Pack the cavity with high temperature wheel bearing grease, it will make the seal work better, longer.
