sheathing vs shrink tubing
« on: September 11, 2010, 03:12:15 PM »
So I've been unable to find the vintage sheathing in a size suitable for five and six wires used in the old K1 switches so I've resorted to shrink tubing and I really like it. I'm wondering how it will hold up as the sheathing always cracks. My suspicion is shrink tubing did not exist in 1970s.

You can always wrap with electrical tape and use shrink-tubing over just the end to keep it from unraveling.

used shrink tube alot
as long as you cut it evenly it will not split or crack
if you want you can seal the ends with rtv or a epoxy

Industrial supply places like McMaster-Carr carry the stuff. Go for the polyolefin type; it's better than PVC.

You have another alternative which is Silicone Tape which self fusing and will look like the original tape. You can buy it in the Plumbing Dept at Home Depot.  Here is how it works:

There is an ebay seller in Taylorsville NC that has polyolefin shrink tube in various diameters and lengths.  It is thin walled but it is heat resistant to about 260 degrees.  I needed a piece for the starter wire that goes below the crank.  I ordered a 10 foot length for less than $6 with shipping.

Same stuff as the new silicone tapes, has the look of electrical tape but not the mess.
