Help!! Stuck on the expressway!!
« on: September 10, 2010, 10:17:33 PM »
Well no not quite. I pulled off and I'm at La Quinta.

Anyways, I topped off the gas tank and decided to add some oil as well. About 10 miles down the road the bike started losing power.

Even at full throttle, it wouldn't go past 55.

Another 30 miles down at it died completely.

The bike now starts up fine, revs just great, but as soon as it rides past a mile or so the bike just looses power and putters to a halt. When I press the clutch and rev the engine it revs happily.

I think I overfilled it with oil.

What's broken and how do I fix it?

I don't think it's the gas.

I added a solid half bottle to the engine.

Also, I stuck my fingers in the exhaust and it's thick with oil. Unburnt oil.

if its over filled the only thing i can think of is to drain it out of the oil tank from the drain plug or if still stuck mybe cyphon it with a rubber hose

Overfilled with oil and vacuum in gas tank/ slow fuel delivery.... crack open the gas cap an ride some like that.... may be rust/gunk restricting the petcock tho'.....
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

I honestly don't think it's the fuel part.

The engine revs happily when the bike isn't in gear.

So it must be something else. I hope I didn't ruin it.

I agree with Spanner, check your gas cap vent. (crack open the gas cap at speed). Could have picked up some crud in the gas.

So overfilling the engine with a half bottle of oil won't ruin anything?

Have you checked your oil level? What makes you convinced it's overfilled? If it is, why don't you drain some out?

You have been advised twice now to try and ride it with the cap vented, have you?

No fuel..... no go after a while and oil in exhaust. Revving in the driveway is not the same as riding under load.
Unless your air filter just had a small family of squirrels move in ;D

Well overfilled and drove like that for 30 or so miles while the bike kept on sputtering down.

Again, that's while in gear. Out of gear it revs like a champ.

Bike is a 73 CB350F.

I'll replace the inline filter tomorrow and ride with the cap open.

I'm off to bed.

Thank you for all the replies.

Airfilter soaked in oil? Overfilled oil > oil splashed out of vent tube into the airbox > filter gets soked in oil > no air to carbs. Easy to check. Happened to me with my lawn mower once.
