CB750K2-Anyone versed on installing the kickstarter shaft?
« on: September 12, 2010, 09:45:16 AM »
Does it require some sort of pre-load on the spring? Clymer doesn't address it. Doesn't seem like it has enough preload to hold the starter pedal up if I install it like the manual says: "Install kickstarter shaft".

I took these photo to remind me how to put mine back together. If memory serves you need to push the longer end of the spring toward the front of the case with a screwdriver.

yes, you need to pre-load the spring when you install it or the kick lever will not return to the up position.

Funny thing about regret is...... its better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done.

Thx Brantly and Nokrome. Oh take a picture before you take it apart? That's a novel idea!   ;)

Maybe next time.

Thx again.

It's a little tricky, having three hands might help.  Assemble the pawl and spring onto the gear and shaft.  Slide the shaft over a little so that it's end is not protruding from the pawl.  When lowering the assembly into the case, stop half-way in and hook the end of the spring onto the crankcase as in the pics above.  Then use your screwdriver to push the pawl down under the horizontal pin in the crankcase, then lower the shaft the rest of the way in and push it sideways to slip it into the bearing in the crankcase.

That's kinda how I did it. I grabbed the end of the shaft with vice grips. Turned it to where the pawl bearer found its home, pried the spring up with the screwdriver into its holder, then pushed the shaft sideways into the bearing of the crankcase. Either way works.

Film at 11 in my build thread. Thanks everyone. I had a vague memory of doing it once, a deja vue moment, must have been decades ago.
