Hello from Colorado
« on: September 13, 2010, 08:00:06 AM »
Recently picked up a 1982 CB650SC Nighthawk with 12K miles (after the Corvette I had caught fire and was totaled).  Typical story...sat unused for entirely too long so many issues to deal with:

Carbs of course were just a mess

Tank leaked in three spots

Petcock leaked like crazy (just what I needed after the car fire!)

Various electrical issues

Aftermarket exhaust (MAC 4 into 2) with no baffles and stuffed full of steel wool pads

Front brake master cylinder bone dry

Chain/sprockets completely worn out

Fast-forward about 4 weeks...

Cleaned carbs and re-installed, and discovered that the bowl vent tubes were missing.  Few bucks worth of fuel hose and fittings from the parts store and that's fixed.

Picked up a replacement tank at a local salvage yard.  Dented up and the wrong color...but solid.

Pesky petcock...being on my limited budget I'm not about to pay what dealers want for a new petcock, so I disassembled the "unserviceable" petcock, machined a new internal seal out of Delrin, replaced some O-rings and Viola it works beautifully.

Replaced main 30A fuse (you don't even want to know how it was wired up).  Repaired faulty front brake light switch (another "unserviceable" part fix  ;D )

Exhaust...this one had me just laughing.  I was able to find some replacement baffles online, not exactly the right size but close enough that with a little grinding they worked just fine.  Nice sound, not so quiet as the stock exhaust, but not obnoxiously loud either.

Bled the front master cylinder...no leaks and works just fine.  Why it was dry is beyond me.

Slapped on a new generic chain and some sprockets (just to get some riding in before the snow flies).

Lots of cleaning, some paint (just spray can for now, for the sake of getting some riding in).  I decided I wanted to see how it looked without the metallic paint and without the huge "chrome" striping around the tank and down the side...just basic black.  I think I'm digging the all-black look!  I will do a proper clear-coat paint job over the winter.

Few more tweaks here and there...and off we go!  Have done about 220 miles so far...a little smoking initially, burning crap off from sitting for so long, didn't take much for that to go away.  Averaging about 54 MPG and runs like a top!

Greetings from Colorado Springs. Good to see another Colorado 650. Not me, but I know Terry will show up soon.

When are you going to fill in your information or are you going incognito?

We're all special  ;D That's why we're here.

Springs, eh?! I thought that street layout looked familiar. One reason I suggested your info. Not too far from you. Across the street from Mountain Ridge Middle School. Lexington & Dynamic. Briargate area.

Guess I'll have to introduce you to the Denver contingent one day but that won't be on the 750/900 until spring probably as the assembly has just begun. Gotta get back into the garage later today and work on assembling the top end after all the home-type things are completed that I have slated for today due to company (the guys) arriving for the next 2 weeks.

Jerry

Cool always up for meeting new folks...and hell spend more time in Denver than in the Springs anyway!

I live over in the Springs Ranch area.

You originally mentioned 30A fuse?! I didn't think any of our bikes take anything higher than 15A. If you haven't checked that out you may want to. That could be a problem or might be an attempt to get around a problem.

Yeah it is clearly marked as taking a 30A fuse.  Checked the manual also.

Want to know what u used for the carb vents.

Short piece of fuel hose (yeah was a PAIN to get in between those two ports...heating it up some helped, along with a little light weight oil), drilled small hole in the hose before squeezing it into place, shove in plastic barb coupler (making a "T"), attach another hose to that barb up to a "T" fitting above carbs, install carbs on to bike, attach that "T" to airbox hose.  Done!
