Blinker not working on right side
« on: September 13, 2010, 05:23:52 PM »

Hello, I just installed a new flasher relay on my 77cb550 k and the blinkers don't work on the right side, matter in fact they shut off completely. The turn signal light comes on by the ignition and blinkers but not front or rear blinkers. Did not have this problem before nw relay. Any ideas??

I'm having trouble picturing the problem, Front left signal works, rear left?

Anything actually blink or just running lights?

You may have unplugged or upset a ground when unplugging things in the back by the fusebox / under the air box.  I know I had to take everything out under the seat to get a good grip on the plugging the guy in.

Here's how these auto relays are supposed to plug.
3 terminals are,

Green (-)
Black wire  (+) or (x)
Grey wire  (F) or (L)

If its the standard 2 terminal plug, which is what I got, disregard the ground and you only have to plug in the Black and the Grey.

...in simple terms prob the reverse of what you have in right now. Let us know how it goes.

alright i had the relay flasher on incorrectly and after switching it around it still isnt right.  so my running lights are on both front and back turn signals, its when i put on my right turn signal the lights turn off completly only on the right side. the left side, front and back works great. make sense? i havent had time to pull the seat off yet, hopefully tonight but do you think its just a loose connection somewhere?

Hey Lefty,

So at least thats one thing out of the equation (proper relay wiring), I wonder if any of the other board members know, Is it possible to fry a relay by wiring it backwards and sending current through it? I think it may be.

Your problem lies somewhere in a connection thats not 100%, the signals go into running light mode just like you described. One side stops working and the other will just stay on. It means part of the system isnt getting the proper voltage it needs. You can start checking voltage making sure things are coming in properly but I'd say find out if the new relay could have gotten fried first, cause otherwise you'll be chasing ghosts.

If it comes down to it,

Alright, I bought a new relay again to see if I maybe fried the one I just put it and that didn't help.  So I took the seat off and looked for loose wires and found none. Then I pulled the head light off and I found a loose connection, it was a solid green wire, the same ground wire that connects to the side of the headlight shell, I plugged it back in and it worked great again, for now! Haha I was relieved, riding with no right blinkers is not easy! Thanks for the help!

On a rainy Sunday, take apart all your electrical connections, clean with a brass brush and scotchbrite pads and spray a light coating of corrosion-X into each one.  It will save you, and all future owners, hours of frustration.  I do this to every connection I ever remove on these bikes.  It might help to slightly pinch the female connector also to re-establish the solid click as the male is inserted.  Corrosion-X is an aerospace corrosion inhibitor and moisture displacer that is far far superior to anything NAPA or Walmart sells.  It is available on the net from aircraft supply houses.

Avoid cops. When you can't , use  hand signals. Buy as much time as possible, and ride it.
