no reserve?
« on: September 15, 2010, 01:45:48 PM »
Maybe I am missing something, but on my way home this morning I put 4 gal in my '75 cb550f which surprised me a bit as I had been ridding with the petcock arrow 'aiming' down at the "on" but I Just noticed my manual clearly shows "on" as being up..  Maybe the label is wrong on the petcock? (i just double double checked..  on is written on the bottom and res at the top).  I thought my tank was 3 gallon's "ON" with one in the reserve for a total of about four?

There should be an arrow cast onto the side of the petcock lever...this indicates the direction of operation.  So basically, the lever should cover the "on" label for standard operation and it should cover the "res" label for reserve operation.

which is what I assumed, but I am sure I put 4 gallons of gas in...  I guess I will try flipping it upside down and see if anything happens.

Maybe the two inch plastic tube on your petcock inside the tank is missing or damaged? The tube is what feeds your fuel line. Once the fuel in your tank falls bellow the tube opening your engine should start to become fuel starved forcing you to switch to reserve.
