« on: September 15, 2010, 05:18:13 PM »

The "wheel" is the hub, spokes and rim assembled. What do you really need (and why, just curious). There are many discussions of this, I won't beat you up too bad for not searching first, as i like to talk.  ;)

The widest rim comfortably laced to a hub is a 3.5. The widest tire is a 150 in metric, or a 5.00 in inches. More than that requires repositioning the brake stay, and will only gain an additional fraction.

If you have a hub, you'll need spokes and a rim. Most common source is Buchanans Spokes.com.  Not cheap.

Stock width rim is 2.15 and stock tire is a 110, or 4.00.

o ok. that helps a ton. the main reason why i was needing the wheels is because the ones on it are old and look like crap. also the tires are dry rotted so need them too. i just wasnt sure what will fit and what wont

Then you'll be polishing your hubs, and replacing the spokes and rims. If its basically a stock bike I would just go with modest increases in size or it will look and feel out of place.

Fronts rims are 1.85, go to 2.15. Rear is 2.15, go to 2.5 or 3.0.
Tires are Front 90 metrics, 3.25 inches, go to 100 metric, 3.6 inches.
Rear tire go to 120 metric, 4.5 inches.

IMO

If your bike is basically a stocker, that you intend to ride soon, I'd stick with the 19 and 18.

I'm experimenting with a 18 fr and 17 rr, but you have to be willing to compromise. I have other bikes to ride. The 18 front wil look weird with the stock fender which is curved for the 19. And you might have clearance problems elsewhere. On mine the brake brackets are very close, but i had mine chopped way down and am running a different fender that doesn't mount on the brake brackets.

Later CB750s came with a 17" rear, so that's doable, likely no clearance problems. It will lower the rear of the bike a tad and kick out the front end, a tad, for more "trail". Again you have the looks problem of a fender curved for an 18" wheel. Mine looks a little weird under the 18" fender. There's more open air between the wheel/tire and the fender. Also, it will be harder to lift up on the centerstand. And it will stand straighter on the sidestand. I am running a slightly longer front end to restore the ride height, but I'll still have to muscle it up on the centerstand.

Consider staying stock.

Rear or Front. Best on stock rim IMO is the stock size, premium tire. I don't like the stock ribbed tire on front, prefer some tread pattern.

Rear: Biggest, not necessarily best,  you can go to 4.5in or 120 metric. This would look a little better than the skinny stocker, may wear a little longer.

Front: Biggest , not necessarily best, is 3.5in or /90 metric. These will give a little heavier steering feel, but may feel more comfortable when braking.

These came from a couple of rim/tire fitment charts I have.

Best is subjective, within the rims limits. Well when I was young (like you) i always put the widest tires on it I could. So a 4.50 on the rear and a 3.60 on the front would've been my "best" choice. Perfectly fine and serviceable and safe and all that. They'll crown a little bit, but they may also last longer overall. I liked the look. after all it was soooo powerful!

Now, I'm content with the stock sizes of 4.00 and 3.25. I'd ditch the rib on the front, but keep the size. Bridgestone BT-45s would be good if made in those sizes. No crowning, but if your loaded (with gear) or a person, they'll wear out sooner, maybe.

So, do you want the look? go bigger. Otherwise, stay stock.

Stock size is best for these bikes.

Download the manual in the faq section and read up.
