OK, I'd like to know the truth!
« on: September 16, 2010, 07:04:01 AM »
Did the CB750 1971 K1 ever come in candy blue green anywhere in the world? There are those that say it did but I can't find anything that substantiates that.

Thats a factory color for 1970, right?  Some were probably sold that way, even if it wasn't offered officially.  I have a 1989 RX7 in Nobel White, which wasn't offered on the books after 1988.  left over paint, left over panels and body pieces, etc.  It happens.

Yeah, that's not good enough :)  69s and 70s came in that color. Since the 71 had so many body changes including a new set of colors, I doubt candy blue green was one of them.

I've never found anything to show that the candy blue/green was used after the K0's either.

I was there, actually in dealerships from 1970 to 1975. Never saw a K1 that color. But I didn't see all of them.

Yeah I don't think so either. It just annoys me when people make false representations about CB750s they are selling. But, I guess that's ebay. And then again, why should I care. I'm not an expert! Forget it. :P

Keep in mind that a lot of these bikes were titled as the year they were first sold and registered.  So there are probably a lot of KO 750's out there that are titled as 71's.

Good question and awaiting opinions. I have one of those K1's. It is titled as a 1970 but is the K1 model with a build date of 9/70. It is currently gold and I was considering repainting it blue/green. I did ask Hondaman that same question. He said "fully 50% of the KO - K3 bikes were in gold." Here is his response and I hope he does not mind I quote him here. "As far as I can tell (and remember!) the blue/green color was only an "old factory" color (hard to paint, apparently: many were marginal in appearance on the showroom floor, as I recall). This meant that only K1 up to about 6/70 production could have come with it in those days. The "new factory" K1 came in gold, red, and green, and broke my heart: I always wanted the blue/green one and never got one." So according to this it is possible to have a K1 in the blue/green even though you don't see many. However, if you have a copy of the August issue of the VJMC mag go to page 25 and you will see a blue/green K1.

Looks like the candy blue green K1 was sold in the Japanese market. I referenced the Japanese model parts book (see pic) and came up with these part numbers listed below. Also note the letters AZ at the end of the part number indicate the color, which is candy blue green.

1969-70 Fuel tank and large side covers with slots:

83700-300-020AZ  right side cover
83600-300-020AZ  left side cover
17500-300-040AZ  fuel tank

1971 Fuel tank and side covers without slots: (starting serial # CB750-1055209)

83700-300-030AZ  right side cover
83600-300-030AZ  left side cover
17500-300-040AZ  fuel tank

Example of a Japanese market candy blue green K1 recently sold by Yamiya:

I sold bikes at Thrifty Lad HONDA in Santa Monica from late in 1970 through September of '71. We were a high-volume store that discounted the price. I sold a lot of 750s. One Saturday AM I delivered 18 bikes!  No candy blue-green K1 ever crossed the line. Gold was good - Red was OK - Green was never ordered for our stock.

Spooky Toms lists one in Polynesian Blue Metallic, which would be pretty close to the Candy Blue Metallic.

Yeah I knew the Poly Blue was a Japanese and I think maybe British color for the K1 but not US and I'm surprised to learn that Candy Blue was a Japanese color as well. Well it wasn't in the US I guess. I wonder if the Japanese Candy Blue had that neat red speed limit light in the unicorn like the Poly Blue did.

I liked the color enough to paint my '75 candy blue/green and I think it looks terrific. It's a rich color with many subtle changes depending on light conditions. Did the paint work myself and the candy color wasn't that bad, but I have done a lot of spraying for furniture, not automotive. I struggled more with the clear coats, in truth. and one would think that would be the easy part.

Should you be interested, I can have a number of photos if you'd like to see. But as for the color, I have no regrets. But i love my sunrise orange, too.

Johnie,
It's a nice color isn't it but I had never considered it for a K1, just K0s. I need get my basket case project running first and then decide but I still need a painter. BUT, I'm getting close (see pic after two months) but this one was a real mess and I'll clean it all up if it runs OK. Once I find some exhaust I'll be ready to start it and then decide if it's worth an expensive paint job.

Yah, I am nuts for that color too. I bought a NOS KO OEM blue/green tank from a member here a few months ago. It is just a beautiful color. I am still toying with that color or go with the candy gold. Once friends and family saw the blue/green tank they liked the color best and are encouraging me to go with it. I am still on the fence...

That was my thinking too. Many many golds out there. Those Yamiya pics above of the blue/green sure look nice.
