My quest for a tank has ended with what some might consider a piece of the unobtanium...a NOS late model tank  :o

It's from a guy on ebay who's selling off the remains of his parts shop in the midwest.  I got a smokin' deal on it compared to his asking price.  He wanted $475 OBO.  I offered $200 thinking no way will he accept it, but this morning I looked, and he did!  He had one up for auction a few weeks ago that went for over $300, so I'm pretty pleased with myself.  It just needs some paint, and my nice chrome covers and I'll be set!

I've ordered the snowmobile plug wire so I can redo my coil.  The throttle cable has been replaced with a fresh, lubed one, and I lubed the throttle slider as well.  The clutch cable requires one to remove the left side exhaust, which will require a blowtorch to remove one of my bolts...luckily the clutch cable isn't too crusty, so I may put that job off till she's fully functional.

After months of tinkering, and lagging, I finally got her started today!! On the first kick no less. The throttle cable routing is extremely important, as is the grommet on the handlebar where the cable exits.

The bowl overflows, and I haven't put the muffler back on the left side, but it felt great to hear her run again!!

Oh, I love it already, and I'm having fun, too!  I'm glad I can button her up and make it look like a motorcycle again now. 

My early model tank is being professionally cleaned and sealed (for FREE! (helps to have a mechanic dad w/connections).  Still have to install my new brake shoes, chain, and sprockets.

Thank You.  No baffles in the pipes right now.  I've taken care of the titling process, and she's currently non-opped.  I get to keep the original black plate too.

Pissed the neighbors off warming her up before this video ;)  Also found out my sealed beam headlamp still works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still working on the idle adjustment.  I adjusted the float today, no more leaking.  Now I just need another day off to do a tune up!

With the very generous help of Domer, we adjusted the valves (they were already very close), checked out the point (it looks brand new!), swapped out the rear brake shoes, installed a new chain and sprockets, and adjusted the front brake. I'm making my final trip to the DMV tomorrow for tags, and once I do a good greasing on all the appropriate places and get my tank back, I'll be on the road!!

Thank You Joey!  I'm having fun getting her ready for the road again!


I installed a new front brake cable today.  It was a good three or four inches longer than the old one, which was already a little long.  Also bought a gun and greased the FIVE fittings on the front wheel assembly.

Picked up a temporary operating permit so I can ride.  I've had to fight tooth and nail to keep my black plate, but it looks like it will work out.  I have to talk to a manager every time I go to the dmv  >:(

It's only a tank keeping me off the road, mine's at the radiator shop.  I almost tried to rig something stupid just to go for a test ride, but decided I didn't want to blow myself due up to limited resources today.  ;)

I did 'The Works' (and some nuts/bolts) on one of the spare tanks, flushed it, baked it dry, rinsed with gas, installed original dream style petcock, and buttoned the bike back up.  Tank/petcock don't leak: Awesome.  The bike finally idles: More awesome.

That 'works' stuff is nasty.  Don't get it on your hands  ;)

I'm dead tired from work @ 3am, so no ride tonight.  The showers will clear up by the time I wake up, so that will be the time to ride  8)

Third time's a charm, right?  Well, almost.  I buttoned the bike back up yesterday, and changed the oil today.  Almost stripped the screws on the inner oil filter cover, so just made the decision to leave it alone.  The first ride ended with me at the bottom of the hill with a bike that wanted to rev like crazy; the throttle grip needed to be re installed correctly.  On the second trip, I ran out of gas just as I got to the bottom of the hill because the petcock is dripping, and so I didn't put enough gas in earlier: I should have checked before I left.  So I pushed the bike up the hill again.  On the third trip, I made absolutely sure everything was in order.  The throttle was fixed, and now very crisp, and the tank had plenty of gas.  This time I made it around a few blocks in my neighborhood, getting the thumbs up from a couple old dudes.  But, as I was making my way up the last block (hill) to my house, the bike lost power, and started smoking out of the right pipe.  I was at least halfway up the hill, so I pushed it up the rest of the way.  My neighbors must think I'm an idiot for trying to ride this thing...So, I called my dad, feeling kind of glum, thinking I'd broken a piston ring, or something mildly catastrophic.  He suggested I take a look at the plug and see if it's oily, or just carbon fouled.  Well, low and behold, it's just fouled  :)  Could a leaky petcock cause an over rich mixture, and end up fouling my plugs?  I'll fire her up later with a cleaned up plug and see if she runs on both sides again. 

Right now, I need a beer.

I don't think a leaky petcock would have any affect on the mixture.  On this model both cylinders are fed from the same carb and share the same spark.  What did the the other plug look like?  If it's OK, then you should compare the strength of the spark on each plug, by cranking it with the plugs pulled but in their cap/sockets and touching the frame or motor.  Especially in a low light environment, you should be able to see the actual sparking and tell if each side is as strong as the other.  A good blue arc would be ideal.  If this side is weaker looking (or maybe not even visible) then you may have a problem with either the wire/lead from the coil or the plug cap.  Often it is found that snipping a piece off the ends of the lead and re-inserting them, re-establishes connection - if the problem is in the wire.  I would think that on these models a cap that's causing a poor connection would be a rare occurrence, because its just a connection path between the wire and the plug and doesn't have a resistor base.  The other thing that could throw one cylinder off is the setting of the tappets.  If both cylinders have fouled sparks, then I would suspect either: wrong plugs, carb settings, timing off, or clogged air filter.

I have checked this before, and one plug is weaker, and I suspect the coil is the problem.  The last person to run the bike had a hotter plug on that side to compensate (I assume).  I get a strong red spark, and I get a nice blue spark on the other side.  I'll be installing a HondaMan ignition made for this bike asap, and perhaps that will help.


The other thing that could throw one cylinder off is the setting of the tappets.  If both cylinders have fouled sparks, then I would suspect either: wrong plugs, carb settings, timing off, or clogged air filter.

Domer and I just adjusted the valves, and everything out, but I'll double check them as well.  We are doing the timing tomorrow afternoon.  The bike fired up after I cleaned the plug, but the timing sounded way off.  The last DMV tag reads '95, so I'm forced to assume that today was the first time a load was placed on that motor in over 15 years...it may take some more fine tuning.

It was more (3x) of the same gray smoke it has been spouting from both cylinders.  I assumed it was old carbon burning off an old motor.  And while the bike started right up when I put the cleaned plug back in, I don't recall ANY smoke coming from that pipe, and I was looking for it.  I guess it just wasn't firing at all.  More and more I think about it I keep coming back to the coil.  I will put a brand new plug in when the bike's cold to see if the right side will fire.  If a new plug after a static timing doesn't fix it, I really think the coil will be to blame.  The caps/wires are new.

Pulled the plugs and got good, bright, white/blueish spark from both.  Better than I remember from last time I tested.  The coil's been exonerated for the moment.  More tomorrow.

Question:  My shop manual's instructions for adjusting the cam chain says 'remove the tappet cover, and rotate the crankshaft in the reverse direction, then the opposite direction until the exhaust rocker arm begins to operate'

Does this mean that I want the rocker to be stiff, not loose like when I'm adjusting the valves?  I don't know why it would tell me to rotate the crankshaft in the wrong direction  ???

Ha!  I wouldn't say I'm ready to hang myself just yet.  I've still got a lot of patience left before I break down and take it to the shop.  It also helps that I have a beautifully running 500/4 to keep me happy.  It's true what they say about not leaving yourself without a running bike...

The bike is up and running, I finally took my first ride on her last week...really fun.  I don't have any updated pics, but she pretty much looks like she did in the first picture.  I learned that there is a purpose for the tube going out of the air filter into the carburetor - it apparently cools the carb.  New brakes/front cable installed.  We (my dad and I) figured out the start up procedure - full choke, NO throttle, let it idle for a few seconds, slowly open the choke, and give it a little gas after a minute.  She's stopped smoking, as I suspected would happen.  The clutch plates are still sticking on warm up, and the gearbox isn't perfect, but I had some good fun on it!  I finally got the registration cleared, and kept my original black California plate after the DMV lost ALL my paperwork.   It's a fun little bike, but I'll probably sell her next spring after having some kicks on it, and maybe a few bike show trips. 

On a side note, I've decided to dive into my parts bike and turn it into a runner.

Greggo, if you are reffering to the tube that goes from the filter to the carb insulator, it has nothing to do with the carburation.
If you look at the back of the insulator, there is a chanel that crosses over to the same point on the other side of the carb and at these two points they are in line with two holes in the back of the head.
These holes are passage ways that go through the head and valve guides terminating at the valve stem.
The idea behind this is to stop oil going to far down the valve guides and entering the induction ports which would result in the motor burning oil.
I'm glad you have the Benly up and running...enjoy. 8)

Sam, my shop manual states that in the installation of the air intake "be sure to insert the connecting tube, air vent plastic tube and power air jet tube (on CB92 CA95) in their respective holes"

As of now, I have a uni pod filter filtering the air.  The original had been refurbished with foam to replace the paper, but the foam is worn, and covered in epoxy.  I will do my best to refurbish it again with good foam.  It would be great to get this figured out before I attempt install it on the bike.
